Looking to go back to work as a substitute school nurse

  1. 0
    Hi everyone,

I have been out of the nursing profession for 5 years. I have done various types of nursing, but I consider myself a pediatric nurse and worked in an inpatient setting for about 9 years and also did 2 years of pedi home care. I will be interviewing for sub positions (I have never worked as a school nurse) and I am looking for suggestions on which school nursing topics I should brush up on and the best resources for doing so. For example, I have little to no knowledge of insulin pumps as we rarely saw them inpatient. Thanks so much!!

Asthma, diabetes, seizures, concussions and food allergies are among the "biggies" in my school district. There are some resource books out there that list common complaints in schools and nursing interventions- reviewing one of those might be helpful.

Just a quick ? You were able to maintain your license for 5 years without work hours? or did you have to retake your exam? Just curious.

I know in NY you can. Seems a bit crazy to me but as long as you pay your Registration fee and renew your Infection Control Course you are good to go.

I found the website New York Statewide School Health Services Center when I first became a school nurse, I still use it on a daily basis. Pretty much everything you need to know, you will find there. Good luck
