It's been a week, focus on the positive

Trying hard to focus on the good in the world because this week (and last, for that matter) has been rough.

I filed my first CPS report regarding abuse. I've done possible neglect before but this is the first time a child with bruises and fingerprint shaped marks on their neck and collarbone has required my assistance.

We have a terminal hospice student, diagnosed with cancer over the summer, and we met with a liaison from her outpatient treatment team. It was a difficult meeting to sit through.

Our administration team is falling apart at the seams. I took for granted how fortunate I was to have a wonderful principal last year and now that she retired, I truly know what it's like to be working under inept leadership in a school. It's not fun.

Let's post nice things to cheer and lift spirits. I'll be happy to read them and I bet some other peeps will be, too.

The way my 12 year old daughter looks like the memory of her 5 year old self when she glances back to the car after I drop her off at jr high.

My 8 year old daughter bringing me a tootsie roll from her Halloween candy "because it's your favorite"

My positive things at my school: We have spent last week and this week doing a "secret pen pal" and have been leaving encouraging notes for each other. My secret pal left me a note yesterday telling me how valued I am here at school and how having me here makes her job so much easier :)

My positive stuff personally: I got to go into my Daughter's school this morning and spend 30 minutes in her classroom. It was really nice to see all her work she has done, see how proud she was to show me her stuff, and be doing something for her. I always feel like I race out of the house to get to my school where I work, so it was nice to be at her school for once.

I am looking forward to having next week OFF, a neighborhood chili pot luck tomorrow, gorgeous 60 degrees and sunny today (not the usual Boston weather this time of year), and generally just thankful for what I have. I work in a school where at least 75% of our kids are at or below poverty level. I have a kid resting in my office as I type this who is filthy, smells like feet, and has no shoes b/c his shoes broke on the way to school :(

I've got a corny joke :)

Weekend ahead with my besties; wine, women and a whole lot of nurturing!!!

On a side note, I have been where you are with a dying student and just know you are making a difference to that child, parents and friends by normalizing their life a s much as you can by supporting school attendance when possible.\I truly hurt for you and know we are a here.

Here's a happy thought - my school had a Veteran's Day breakfast for some of the local Vets this am (since we were off last week.) It was really nice to see the men come by and be honored by a really great group of kids. The band played, the men ate. Then they took them off somewhere for another surprise for them (i don't know for what, i'll find out since my dad attended this AM (US Navy Vietnam Vet) :))
