Do you do "formal" teaching?

Hi everyone,

I am new this year and am wondering what other school nurses do as far as teaching. I know we teach everyday all of the time, but do you ever have any assembly's or go into classrooms and do "formal" teaching? And if so, do you use powerpoint/resources?

Thanks

No, but I wish there was an opportunity to teach health. I'm finishing up my Masters in Nursing Education and it would be nice to apply the teaching skills I have learned (objectives, learning theories , etc) in school nursing. I think since some states have taken the title of nurse teacher away we aren't utilized in that way  especially in NY.

Yes, I do, and it is expected of me in my job evaluation. Earlier this year I went in the 5th grade rooms and talked about sleep health. I am doing hand washing with my pre-k and K kids using the Glo-germ kit this month. I'm always gifted toothbrushes from Colgate or local dental groups so I usually pick a group to do a little dental ed with (last year I did preK). I keep it pretty informal and fairly short. Glo germ takes the longest, but the teachers love that one and always ask when I'm doing it. I will also go in and talk about a topic if they want me to- if I have the time. I have a pre-k class that is unusually fascinated with the human body so the teacher and I have tracked down various models and a skeleton and she's asked me

to come in during some of the lessons and talk about some of the body parts.

Not so far. Keeping my fingers crossed that I won't have to. The Special Ed kids have come down to take a tour of the office and I have demonstrated handwashing and stuff of that ilk with them. I have offered my 2 cents in meeting type settings with Admins, but that's it.

I prefer the informal 1:1 stuff.

the only thing i am expected to teach is the puberty talk in tandem with the health teacher. This is one class one time a year to one specific audience so i don't mind it too much. And since it is with the health teacher i feel more like an accessory than a real teaching responsibility. It's more of a matter of popping in the video from P&G, answering a few questions (keeping those questions relevant and appropriate) then passing out some samples. The biggest pain in the butt is coordinating the whole thing.

I do. I was certified as a School Nurse Teacher a few years ago and since then I have been the Health Teacher. I teach 1 Health class to each grade level every week and I really love it! The kids love my class and we cover a lot of stuff throughout the year. I make up my own curriculum (using New York State standards for Health Education) and it's a lot of work but it is often the best part of my day. I do not use a lot of computer resources for my Health classes (for demonstration purposes). I find that my best classes are when I come in with a fun activity and then we all have a discussion. The kids are having fun and their discussions often guide where we go to with the next lessons.

RnQueens-New York State does still have the School Nurse Teacher certification. You should get it (I'm sure you have all the requirements if you have your Masters) and let your school district know what that means you can do. Most people in NY have no clue what a School Nurse Teacher is maybe you can do it and let them know what you can offer at that point. My school was thrilled that me teaching was a possibility.

I am teaching a 9 week long sex education unit (with a couple of general health lessons added in) for Grades 7 and 8 for the first time this year. It runs during winter gym, once a week, which equals 8 actual classes I teach each week. I went to a LOT of training for the curriculum I am using this fall (training made me a certified sex educator).

I'm in my second week and I LOVE it. I am hoping to also teach a HS sex ed unit next year as well. I work for a school that is 100% supportive of my teaching this subject, which is great.

I only do the puberty lesson for 5th graders - really not much at all; brief intro to the subject and watch the video. We have a science night in the spring and I have a table about handwashing using the GloGerm kit.

I did. In my first School Nurse position I had to teach an 8th grade HIV class using curriculum formulated from my State and the American Red Cross who collaborated on materials so schools can teach according to the State Standards. I also taught a Sex Ed class because the kids didn't have the basic info already (rural area and the community is very touchy on the subject). I really enjoyed it. At my 2nd School Nurse job I taught CPR and 1st Aid to the Staff. I became a certified instructor through the American Heart Association. In addition, I have other PowerPoint trainings for BBP, asthma, seizures, etc.

I've taught puberty, hygeine, dental health, nutrition, and hand washing classes to whichever teachers want me to. I enjoy teaching and interacting with the kids that way but it always makes me nervous with their teacher in the room listening. I'm like does he/she think I'm doing it right or a good job? LoL!
