The principal hired a "school nurse" who was NOT a nurse and had no medical background whatsover. She showed up her 1st day with a lab coat and stethoscope around her neck. She then proceeded to hand out pseudoephedrine to the students, make arrangement to "buy" a student's unborn baby since she was faking a pregnancy, sit in the lounge most of the day drinking coffee. Hmmmmm.......I know this is TV but it really rubbed me the wrong way!!

It's a COMEDY ...

The show has previously established (I loooove it, and watch it regularly) that the character hired as the school "nurse" is an incompetent, conniving, evil bimbo (JMHO :)) and the prinicipal is a blithering idiot. Plus, she was only the "nurse" for one day and was sacked as soon as her, ummm, "interventions" were discovered (her teacher husband was even punished by the principal for his wife's actions).

Ultimately, there is nothing on the show that is intended to be taken seriously ...

I agree in general that it should be taken in a light hearted manner, but there was one line that really got to me. When she told her husband she was taking the job, the husband questioned her about not having any training or experience. Her reply, "Oh, please, it's just a public school!"

Yeah, I can take a joke, but that one hit home. I even posted about it on my facebook page, my fellow nurses agreed that was a low blow. But, I still watch and love the show, so I guess it was easily forgiven.

The character in question is a !@#$%%^ idiot -- who cares what her opinion is? In fact, since everything else she says is total, utter nonsense, it's safe to conclude that her views on public education are nonsense, also.

This isn't going to turn into one of those "let's organize a national boycott" things, is it? Those just make us (the larger nursing community) look bad to the rest of the public ...

Relaaaax. I don't see anyone talking boycott. Last I checked, we are all still entitled to our opinions. I personally did not like the dig insinuating that public school are less worthy of care. I work at in a public, low income, urban district so that hit close to home for me. For you, it did not. Enough said. Like I said, I still watch and enjoy the show. It is just an opinion, and they are like elbows, everyone has them. Thankfully we have this wonderful place where we can express ours. :D

No boycott here!! The show is a comedy and paints everybody in a bad or comedic light. I am just disappointed for the portayal of a school nurse to finally get some TV time and it be in such a negative light.

I probably would have laughed it off easier if I had seen at least one TV show potraying us in a positive light.

But, the way I see it, the show didn't portray school nurses in a negative light because it was clear that the character was not a school nurse -- she was impersonating a school nurse for her own, nefarious purposes; and screwed that up as badly as she does everything else in her life. No one (inc. the non-nurse general public) could possibly take her seriously as an example of a real "school nurse." :)
