I only have 2 hours left tonight, but we haven't had any patients ALL night long, except a quick outpatient B12 injection. I have been sooo bored!!! I've gone through and made sure there were charts made up already. What do you all do on slow nights. We've been sooo busy lately that this is a huge change.

Wow, I can't imagine that. Our census tonight is 6. I'm the only nurse here, which is fine because there isn't much to do.

One night I worked and had one patient all night long. That patient had the best nursing care of her life!!

Where I work we can't have any outside materials -- no books, magazines, movies, nothing. So all I can do is do actual work-related things or use the internet for very limited purposes (everything good is blocked).

Try to get CME like medscape so you can get some training at night. Those quiet shifts are absolutely the worst!

Do CE's and read the Allnurses Forum :-):heartbeat

We were without patients again for 2 whole days!!! We did have ER's trickle in all last night though, so that kept us busy. I could get CEU's but I already have more than I need and don't renew until 3/10. I've been working on some other projects, like updating policies and healthfair things though. We have a whole 2 patients tonight. ;)

Where in the world are you?

If I was all by myself, non-work related material might have [accidently???] slipped out of my bag and into my hands. Just saying...:D

I'm in Kansas, very rural hospital. We had 2 whole days againt this week with NO patients, had to cut back a whole shift, but got to spend that much more time with my babies (aged 23 months and 3 months:). I also finished reading a book my sis gave me and made up a new report/brain sheet. Some non work related material definetely slips outta everyone's bag around here at night sometime or another ;)

enjoy the down time. It does not last. My hospital has the LTC connected, and i walk down to them and ask if they need help. All i can say is enjoy the time, especially when the nightshift has less staff.
