New to Rhode Island- Networking

U.S.A. Rhode Island

Published

Hello-

I am a new graduate from Pennsylvania trying to get a job in Rhode Island (husband has been in RI since June). I was just looking for any advice on where I can find a job, and any networking tips you may have. I applied to RIH, Newport Hospital, South County, and some positions on craigslist, with no luck. For a little background- I was an aide for 3 years in a Trauma Surgical ICU here in PA, before that I was a home health manager, and before that a Real Estate agent. I will be taking RI boards at the end of January.

Thanks in advance!

I too have been trying to catch a break in the RI job market as a new grad with not much luck...I have found that it is very difficult to get into the NE job market as a new graduate nurse. I applied to almost ever hospital and Residency program in that state as well as CT and no luck. I cant even get hospital in CT to acknowledge that I have submitted an application (havent had any application status updates since submitting app). I would suggest that you just keep applying everywhere until someone calls you...Tough market in the NE...Good luck!

I am having the same problem in central MA so I am considering trying in RI. The nursing job market here in central MA they say is saturated so after taking my first step and getting my CNA I don't know if its worth the investment to go further. I am even at a further handicap as I have no real experience to show. After 30 years in Engineering I thought this was a way I could get back to work but now??

Don't know if your gonna have better luck in RI...Market is really crappy...Most places in the NE havent even acknowledge that I submitted an application.

Are you currently licensed in CT? If you don't have a valid CT license its doubtful your app will get past the first person..Most have the requirement as a Valid CT license. If you don't hold a CT license that is probably why you haven't gotten any acknowledgement of your submittal, you don't have the needed requirements.

I have several friends who work in HR and they've said, with the amount of apps the get, if they see all the requirements aren't met the app is forgotten about.

Well I just submitted my request for a test date in MA and would follow with RI and CT but if it isn't going to lead to anything then why bother. Same outlook for nursing is true as you said it is probably like that everywhere. As my cousin put it they were crying for nurses a few years ago and everyone heeded the call and now one college in Worcester has a two year waiting list for their nursing program!!

I am taking NCLEX Feb 3rd for RI licensure....I have had 3 interviews since my first post...1 offered me the job the other 2 are supposed to be deciding this coming week....Persistance is key...every Monday I call the places I want to work and have sent in my resume.

Congrats....I have not been as proactive b/c I am still in VA and have been preparing for the NCLEX. I took it Thursday and just found out this morning that I passed. I am hoping that now that I am licensed and will be moving to the state that I will have better luck.

Yes again congratulation you are at a different stage in nursing I am just starting out and with no experience for me I have to decide where I am going with this and whether I can hopefully find something to pay my bills right now for the moment. CNA paychecks seems to be like making two peanuts and a fish head in comparison to the last year I worked as a contract Engineer. Maybe moving South where high tech has more focused its growth is the answer and the cost of living is not totally out of whack with salaries like it is in MA

Joella- Congrats on passing!! When are you moving up? I definitely think that will make a big difference!

Ocean Cruze- "CNA paychecks seems to be like making two peanuts and a fish head in comparison to the last year I worked as a contract Engineer." -- I just laughed out loud...I can totally relate! I worked as a CNA following a real estate career...I have also found salaries are totally at a mismatch with the cost of living in this area as well. Newport is full of "old money"...I guess that's how they afford it all? My husband and I often talk about walking up to one of the mansions doors and asking the people that live there "what the heck do you do for a living?!" Anyways, I hope you find the answer that you're looking for, and if nursing is your passion, Go for it!!

No I am not currently licensed in CT. I just took and passed NCLEX this week. However, all of the positions that I have applied to in CT have been new graduate programs with the requirement being that I have obtained my CT license by the program start date.

Joella I def. think you have a chance of landing a job here. Just make sure they know you are in this area long term. I think that scares employers most about seeing out of state applicants.
