Hello R.I. hospital is part of Lifespan which includes affiliations with 4 other hospitals. RIH has a union, manditory OT and also can mandate you to stay extra if someone calls out for their shift. It is a trauma equipt hospital actually the only one in R.I and is also teaching. It is a huge hospital that is very busy always. Hope this can bring some ideas to you.

I go to school in RI, have done rotation at Hasbro which is part of RI Hospital. A good friend of mine is a nurse at Women & Infants. A few of my classmates actually work there at RIH & I honestly have not heard anything bad about RIH, we do our study group sometimes in their huge cafeteria....I am actually going to try to do a critical care internship there when I graduate in Dec...I am waiting for the packet to come as we speak. RI is just like any other place to live...it all depends on what part & what part of town. I hear the area right around the hospital is a bad area although I have walked many times around there for parking way up by W&I..I have never actually personally seen anything bad....but it was also late afternoon/early evening.......I hope to get into that program though....Go on their website..lots of info about them......they seem like a good place to work for impo Good Luck!!

Some of my fellow grads are now working at RI Hospital, Hasbro and Women and Infants. All are great hospitals in Providence. It's true that the area they're located in isn't one of Providence's best. Haven't heard any complaints from anyone either.
Good thing about RI is that everything is so close since it's such a small state. Doesn't take long to get from one end of the state to another.

This post has a lot of great info but W&I is actually part of Care New England which includes Kent, and I think Butler Hospital as well. And yes, the area around the hospital campus is pretty bad. They do have shuttles which will take you to the parking garage. I did my last semester of clinicals at RIh and it was OK-just a little too big for my tastes. I work at Kent and am liking it. Good luck in your job search!

One of my daughters homecare nurses used to work the NICU at W&I years ago.....I like Kent actually.....if it wasn't so far from my house I'd try to work there......

Rhode Island Hospital is big but it also provides you with a lot of experience. They are a union hospital, unlike their other Lifespan affiliates. I worked there as a transcriptionist before nursing school and loved it. Yes, there are shuttles to take you to your car if you have a late shift. Their new ED is fabulous! Unlike one of their other affiliates, you have CNAs to help you with your shift. The affiliate that I worked at practiced the primary nursing model which means that you are pushing and IV med and someone with C-Diff is calling for the bedpan. I am not against total care of the patient but on a difficult patient floor, this can wreck you. I have a friend who works at RI Hospital and loves it. Good luck! Kent is a wonderful hospital too. Interview at both.

Kent starts new grads at 21.82 an hour-evening shift differential is 1.25 and I think weekend diff is 2.00, but I'm not sure.Kent tends to be very suppotive of staff furthering their education and the benefits are good. They don't have a union, wheras RIH does. I'm at Kent now and have been for 2 and a half years. I'm pretty happy there.
