Returning and how to find niche without wasting time?

Hi,
I too am reentering the workforce. Background BSN Nursing 1993, BS in Physical Education 1988. Worked ICU/CCU/telemetry floor 4-5 years .....secondary infertility hell hit so I left to go to Cardiac Rehab for 2 years, took a break, then worked 2 more years (left 3 years ago when we adopted our 2nd child). Now we have adopted another child and my oldest will be going to college in 2 years! I am going to sign up for the refresher course starting in 3 weeks but I am trying to figure out where to take my career. I feel like there are so many options, it is paralysis by analysis. I don't want to waste too much time getting certified in an area I discover I don't like. Is there careeer counselors for nursing to point out all the options we have? I have also considered going back for my masters but I don't know what specialty. I don't even know what is required for some specialty or certifications needed. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
love hugs and prayers
Carol

I don't have advice for you. I just wanted to give you encouragement and tell you that I am in your shoes. I'm 52yo and I'm crawling my way out of the deep, dark pit of depression. I'm doing okay now, but still not working. I can think of a million reasons to retire altogether. I feel paralyzed by the fear of "what if I get a job and I hate it" and "do I really want to do nursing or is there a new career out there that might be less stressful and just as rewarding?"

So I get what you're saying. We want to get it right the first time. It just costs too much energy to hop from job to job hoping we nail it sooner or later.
