Retake NCLEX after 17 years!!

I took (and passed) the NCLEX in 1991 after receiving my BS. I worked in Critical Care, then completed graduate school to become a NP. Now after taking a 5 1/2 yr hiatus to raise 3 children the state I am living in (NJ) does not want to honor my 2 NYS licenses. Instead I am told to retake the NCLEX. I have never had an issue with my license. Has anyone encountered this in any state???

Do you have any type of active license? NP or RN in any state? That might be the first place to start. What is NJ wanting? Refresher course? Or..is retaking the NCLEX the only option?

Licenses are active, but not in the state that I live in now. It would be a long commute - but I'm considering it!
