There are nurses from all over Texas in my class. The online class portion is handled at Austin Community College. They are enrolled through their local community college. They will do their clinical hours in their city. The website is
http://nurserefresher.austincc.edu/

Hope that helps!

I saw the PHES site too. There are 2 hospitals in Houston that they utilize. One is in the heights and very close to my parent's house. I live actually near Austin, but would prefer Houston as it would actually be easier for me as I could stay with my parents and the hospital there in the Heights is a stone's throw.

I would not start the course though for a bit as my daughter is fixing to have a baby so I need to help out with that for a while.

in Texas no, check with your BON, there is an application, or petition process.... and the refresher course has to be BON approved....I found my refresher course site, from my BON web pages as one of their approved list...link

Phlox-- I can't send private messages yet.
So far the ACC refresher has been a good experience. I have completed the orientation, the first two units and had one conference call. The faculty has been very helpful. I have not met any in person but they are very quick to answer emails and phone calls. I also needed to get my BLS and the ACC classes were full. They helped me find a class. So far so good!

I have just completed the nurse refresher course from PHES. They are located in Stafford. It was about a 45 minute drive for me but worth it. Yvette Cheeks is the instructor, she is awesome. The rest of the staff are really nice and professional as well. The didactic portion was about a week in the classroom from 930-330. The day wasn't too long and but you got a lot of information. They give you handouts and plenty of resources such as websites and study guides to get more information if needed. They also have a one day skills lab. Then you must do 80 hours for clinical. I really enjoyed the classroom experience because you get to hear all Yvette's real life experience as well as the other nurses in the class as opposed to just reading it in a book. I felt each class included a well rounded content of legal/ethics/jurisprudence as well as the topic for the day, for example med administration. I would recommend this program to anyone considering taking a refresher course. You can find them online at http://www.phesonline.com Hope this helps!

I'm in California, not Texas, but I started a refresher course 3 weeks ago. Background: I worked 10 years as an RN, then out for 15 years. Let my license expire, and retook boards in June and passed, which boosted my confidence. I've felt really pretty confident until today.....

my first clinical day. Overwhelming! to say the least. So much to absorb. Where the supplies are located, how they chart....pharmacology!!!! (lots of IV push meds)...the IV pumps and other equipment. I shook just doing accuchecks and was so clumsy that I was embarrassed. (I can NEVER do anything when I'm being watched.) And I only worked an 8-hr shift...next weekend, it's 12-hr shifts. Holy smokes! I'm terrified to start an IV and I used to be very good at that...the new equip just doesn't 'feel' the same.

But still, somehow, I know I can do this. Three steps forward, one step back....but I'm still moving forward.

By the way....the other nurses in the program did not seem as intimidated as I did, so don't let me scare you. Has anyone else in a refresher program felt the same?
