Career advise

I am interested in the field of research nursing and would like some career advise. I live in Phx, and have my B.S. in Life Sciences and currently work in an oncology lab as a cytogenetic technologist. I plan on applying to nursing school next month. I would still like to be able to use my science/genetic background but also want to be able to interact with patients as well. From what I've read I think research would be a perfect match for me, particularly CRC. I guess what I'm looking for is advise on how to get started in research? Although I have the laboratory experience it is not research based, but we do analyze samples for clinical research studies.
I plan on applying for the part-time options for Maricopa CC (GWCC and GCC) which of course have a 2 + yr waitlist. Any suggestions on how to gain experience while waiting?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. thank you
