Hi all! This is my first post...just registered today! I found this BB to be very good for nurses to communicate! I was wondering tho, are there any clinical research nurses out there? None of the posts under "research nursing" really applied. I would like to see somebody in the same field respond.

I am a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator at a University and do all types of studies.

Hi Karen and welcome to the site! I also do peds vaccine studies and have been looking for other coordinators who do the same..for about 2 years! Maybe we can share some recruiting strategies sometime. I am gearing up for a flu vax study and also a pneumoccocal study..I will very busy soon.

Hello

I too just registered. I wanted to know is research a good area to go into for nurses. I just got a Master of Science in Public Health and don't know what to do with it. I have worked in Med/Surg, ICU, Rehab, and agency work. I currently have an interview next week for a case management position at Vanderbilt Hospital in Tn. I don't have any experience in the area. I just wanted to know more about research in nursing and what is the money like???

After lurking for many years I have finally registered! I am working as a Clinical Research Coordinator at a University. We do investigator initiated research, and it is all new to me. It is really interesting, but of course our biggest challenge is funding and subject recruitment. How about every giving info on any resources they know of that would benefit all of us? My background is non-hospital nursing since I graduated over 10 years ago. Nice to meet you all.

I also work for a University. I agree, recruitment is a major problem. I have recently read that 80% of all pharma trials have to extend their recruitment periods because of lack of enrollment. I have tried lot's of things, newspaper ads seem to work the best, but are expensive. I am interested in trying radio the next chance I get.

Good luck

I work in oncology research and find that in treatment and prenvetion tirals, physician referral is the best source. Newspaper and radio often result in individuals who are curious but not truly interested or committed once they get the info, side effects, time committment. We have referral forms made for specific protocols given to physicans offices/clinics.

Hi. I'm currently in a non-nursing field and I would like to be a clinical research associate or coordinator. Can someone please tell me how I can get to this goal? I live in the Philadelphia area. My undergrad degree is science related but not nursing. I would like to get into public health or something to do with regulatory work.

Thanks!

HI ALL,

THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HERE. I'M A RN BSN THAT HAD DONE 10 YEARS OF PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH (I WAS A PHARMACY TECH SPECIALIST, LICENSED AND BOARD CERTIFIED THEN) IN THE LATE 80'S AND MID 90'S AND WANT TO GET BACK IN IT. I AM FORMERLY FROM CHICAGO BUT NOW LIVE IN TULSA, OK BECAUSE OF MY HUSBAND'S JOB (BEEN HERE FOR 7 YEARS) I WANT TO GET BACK INTO RESEARCH BUT HAVE HAD NO LUCK. I HAVE APPLIED WHENEVER A POSITION COMES UP BUT NOT SURE WHY I NEVER GET AN INTERVIEW. DO YOU THINK IT'S BECAUSE IT'S BEEN SO LONG??? DO YOU THINK THEY ARE INTIMIDATED BY ME SINCE I WORKED AT A VERY LARGE HOSPITAL IN CHICAGO THAT DID LOTS OF HIV AND CANCER DRUG TRIALS (NORTHWESTERN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL) HAD BEEN THERE OVER 20 YEARS. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET AN INTERVIEW???? ANYONE KNOW OF ANY TRAINING I CAN GET THAT WILL IMPROVE MY CHANCE OF GETTING A RESEARCH JOB. I MISS CHICAGO. I HAD MORE OPPORTUNITIES THERE THEN HERE.. HELPPPPPPPPP ANYONE HAVE ANY ANSWERS... CAN ANYONE HELP DIRECT MY LIFE TO SOMETHING I LOVED AND WAS VERY GOOD AT. I WOULD DEEPLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP ANYONE CAN GIVE ME.

You might want to think about getting certified as a clinical research associate or coordinator. There are a few companies that provide training and testing, you will find them on the internet. I know that certification in this area can go a long way and provides you with valuable information.

At one time I was certified as a clinical research coordinator doing mostly behavioral health studies. I used all methods of communication for subject recruitment. The most success came when I obtained fax numbers for several businesses and faxed fliers for the studies that we were running.

It worked. Hey, we had to get our name out there. Alot of businesses are advertising that way these days. Our office received at least 4 ads per day from other businesses on the fax machine.

I have certification and I can tell you that you must have at least 2 years of full-time clinical research to even qualify. You have to take the exam through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. The only preparation you need is the study guide or a prep class they offer if you need it. By the time you sit for the exam, you should have more than a basic working knowledge of clinical research anyway.

Obtaining a first position in academic research is usually a little easier than with pharmaceutical companies.
