roll out mats

by rehabme

Has anyone heard about roll out mats? Apparently they are an alternative to cot side/ bed rails and if a patient falls out of bed they just slide onto a soft mat on the floor.

Hmm...if they fall out they just slide onto a soft mat on the floor? This doesn't make sense. Why would you let someone just fall out of bed because there is a mat on the floor? I've never heard of these...bug I don't think I would trust them. What if the mat moves or if the patient tries to get up and slips on the mat? No thanks!

It's not a matter of letting them just fall out of bed because of the mat. I've worked in LTC for a while and regardless of how much you pad the rails, use bed alarms, and other preventative measures; someone will ALWAYS find a way to maneuver and "fall" out of bed. These mats lessen the blow to the body if/when the patient falls.
