Benadryl for Dyspnea d/t Dystonia??

by Murse3

I recently had a pt on our inpt rehab unit nearly go into resp. arrest d/t what she described as "diaphragm spasms." The pt't mom gave her 75 of Benadryl quick-dissolving strip and was laughing and joking with us in 4-5 minutes. Anyone with more experience with dystonia please explain. Thanks.

They can also use Benadryl when patients experience EPS reactions from antipsychotic agents. I'm not sure on the mechanism of action.

Dystonia is often produced when medications screw up the dopamine-cholinergic balance in the basal ganglia. Specifically, they block dopamine receptors resulting in an abundance of cholinergic output.
Benadryl along with being an antihistamine also has anticholinergic properties and works the same way that cogentin does in this aspect.
Hope this helps (thanks emedicine)
