Hi Everyone! I have an interview for a new RN grad position on a pulmonary medicine stepdown unit. Can you tell me what you like most about working on this type of unit? What are the challenges? And finally, any advice on preparing for my interview would be greatly appreciated!

Do you know anything about the unit yet? I work on a pulmonary stepdown. We take vented patients and all delivery methods of oxygen. Many of our patients are either just coming in through the ED (not quite sick enough for ICU), coming out of ICU, or were RRTd on the floor. We see a lot of frequent flyers (mostly COPD exacerbations). The patients can be challenging due to their overall medical conditions. They often have multiple comorbidities at play. I love working with and helping wean the vent patients. I've been in the room for numerous patients when they get to speak for the first time after being on the machine (usually using a speaking valve). It can be very heartwarming to hear the first words they say to their loved ones.
As for preparing, just be prepared to talk about any clinical experience you had with ventilator patients. You can also talk about any respiratory patients you saw during your clinical experiences as well. I hope your interview goes well.
