by nursedanny614 Dec 3, '12Why is it so hard to get rid of a cough when chest congestion is involved. Every time I have a cold the cough is always the symptom that lasts the longest. It would probably be easier to deal with if I didn't have hypertension. I am very sensitive to stimulants. Last time I took a deco gestant it felt like I was in front of a radiator. Any ideas on how i can rid myself of this terrible cough and congestion without use of decongestants?

When you have chest congestion, there are cilia up your pipe that move the phlegm upwards. This tickles your throat. Plus, if there is any of the infecting agent not completely surrounded by mucous, those agents can irritate your pipes.
