I'm a Canadian-trained RN, practising in New Zealand for the last 18 months. There was a case here recently about a young man living with schizophrenia who was an acute inpatient at the local hospital and ended up assualting a nurse on duty at the time. He's since come to trial and there were quotes by his mother (who has shared her experiences of being bipolar), saying that she believes he'll kill someone in future and that she hopes it's not her but then... She ALSO said that, as a young child, her son had "ADHD and conduction disorder" (whatever the hell that is!) and that that "can lead to schizophrenia"

?!?!?! So any little kid who's acting up in school and lipping off to their parents is now going to develop schizophrenia??? I was horrified when I read this story. Of course, yes, very sad for all involved, but to publish mom's uneducated opinions as truth was just mind boggling to me. And it was just another reminder of how and why stigma and discrimination are so wide spread in our field...
