This is about Freud's theory, and explanation of the Oedipus complex
I thought I understood this to mean that boy in the phallic stage is attracted to his mother, fears castration because of the father, so he resolves this conflict by internalizing the father and identifying with father
but my textbook says that "the child identifies with the parent of the opposite sex"
can someone explain why the child would identify with the opposite parent?
My previous studies in psychology do not say this,
my brief google searches (wikipedia) do not say that the child identifies with the parent of the opposite sex.
