Stony Brook Psychiatric NP -online

I hesitated with starting an exclusive online PMHNP program but I am thrilled to start such a dynamic, flexible program. We are a military family stationed overseas and the School of Nursing has bent over backwards to help arrange all our meetings (traditionally done at the University) via Skype. I'm in the 2012 Psych NP cohort slated to graduate 2015 and would be happy to answer any questions about the program, process, etc for anyone interested and would love to virtually introduce myself to my classmates. All the best!

Keri, I am a family nurse practitioner and am interested in hearing about the Stony Brook progam! Can you provide me with some information?

Thanks so much!

Hi there! Not sure how much insight I can provide as I just started the program but I can share my experience thus far :) Organized, affordable (a bit over $700 a credit for out of state). I believe they offer a post- masters certificate for a number of specialties. So far...two thumbs up. I enjoy the course I'm taking and the professor is really accommodating. All the best in your search. There are a number of online post-master's programs however, you are required to find your own clinical experiences which surprisingly can be a challenge. All the best in your search.

Make sure the school is accredited. Many schools aren't and accreditation is required by certification agencies. Certification is required to get prescriptive authority, at least in my state. Also, in practice, many insurance companies won't pay for your services if you didn't graduate from an accredited program.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, KeriMarie. Does the school assist students in finding preceptors?

I just started my second year in the Adult NP program at Stony Brook and I will start clinicals in the Fall and you have to find your own preceptors. There is a clinical placement office that helps with setting up contracts/agreements and they have a list of where students have gone in the past that can be used to find a preceptor, but it's up to you to find a preceptor. The placement office appears to help you only if you absolutely can't find a preceptor.

Good to know, Sha-Sha. Thank you so much for the info.

Sha-Sha RN can I PM you for more info? Thanks.

You sure can.

Stony Brook is located near where I currently live, we've actually had a couple students from their program doing clinicals at my hospital. The school has a great reputation, and from the couple of students I have spoke with, they have all been very happy with the program. I'm still working on my Bachelors, but it is one of the schools I am considering applying to when I graduate. We will be moving to NC, to an area there does not appear to be any local programs offering PMHNP programs. Good luck to you, I look forward to hearing more about how you are fairing in the program as you get further into it!

Hi Keri, I know your posts is a little outdated, However I applied to the SBU PSCH NP program and would like to know what are your thoughts on the program thus far. Also how are the tests and clinicals?
