help help help!!!

  1. I am a second year student and having problems writing an essay. can anyone help me with consent and mental health nursing? The patient is in a rehab unit.
The patient is an informal patient and is suffering from depression and alcohol and substance abuse. She is self medicating- therefore her drugs have been taken away from her. Therefore what are the consent issues? Do they need consent to take these from her? Do they need consent for a staff nurse to administer her meds. when appropriate? and if so in what form?
Also do they need consent to search her room?

Please help i will be so grateful

    Hi m8,

    To answer your questions:

Do they need consent to take these from her (tablets)?

    - Yes they are her property

Do they need consent for a staff nurse to administer her meds.
    when appropriate?

    - Yes as she's informal. If it becomes an emergency issue, the staff could be covered under the 'doctrine of necessity' in administering drugs i.e. common law but she should then be assessed for MHA ASAP

and if so in what form?

    - Usually IM but I have known IV sedation

Also do they need consent to search her room?

    - No I don't think so because it's NHS property

Since the introduction of the 1998 Human Rights Act, clients are starting to challenge previous healthcare decisions in court so future practice may change because of case law.

    Mike
