Could someone please tell me the difference between mental health concepts and mental

Please could someone explain this, i would be so grateful , i have searched the internet for this and cannot find an answer

Well, psych nurses aren't really medical. They're still nursing which is psychosocial. A RN, for example, working in a psych unit would give meds, yes, but still be primarily concerned with managing the milieu, i.e. the psychosocial/environmental stuff.

The advanced practice registered nurses, such as the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, would largely follow a medical model. In that instance, let's say they have a new patient. They'll evaluate them with likely an observational sort of physical exam with no auscultating, palpating, etc., a review of systems, labs such as CBC, CMP, TSH, et al, assess with a DSM style of approach and then prescribe pharmacotherapy and potentially prescribe or recommend psychotherapy.

Thank you for clearing that up, i am from the UK, and practice obviously has some differences! Here it is largely ascribed to the medical model, mental health continuum , psychology is used , especially CBT. I love karl rogers theorists and Maslow, i have reservations about Freud , even tho he was a genius! I like Eric erikson and stages of development! Thanks for your response , very helpful .

Nurses really don't participate in CBT or other therapies. That is left to the LCSW (licensed clinical social workers), LPC ( licensed professional counselors), PsyD (psychologists)

I know this differs in other countries. If the BoN said no issue ( I'm not surprised based on your description of your education ) then go with that. I'm impressed many UK educated nurses require additional clinical & theory to meet US generalist nursing requirements. Just like many US trained nurses need hundreds of additional clinical hours to meet UK standards.

What are you asking the question for? I'm feeling rather confused! You say you did the things in the quote below. Did? Do you mean you took courses? Please explain more about your reason for the initial question as well as what is quoted below. What is Cgfns? Please avoid initial abbreviations since not everyone will know what you mean.

Thank you for your philosophical answer! Ok this is what i did

Sociology

Psychology

Dementia

Mental health that covered

Schizophrenia, bi polar and depression, this was taught solid and full time in a classroom and took 160 hours! Cgfns said that my school put this under mental health concepts , therefore did not account me many theory hours in mental health theory! I phoned my college and said this and they said mental health theory and mental health concept are the same !

I do understand what your saying to a degree, but i was told that mental health ascribes to the medical model and adds psychology as an addition like CBT

I did a foundation year in my nursing that i got my placements in and prior to that i did a very detailed pre requisite nursing course that could of put me direct in psych nursing!

I have been in training for 4.5 years full time and just now i have completed the first year of my masters , therefore 5.5 years in training but i did not count that, that will get transferred over when its complete. I also work nearly full time as an RN,

i covered all the branches as where i live in Scotland , we have too! We dont have a NICU so kids get admitted to ICU here so we have to know peads, maternity, psych , gyne, as well as medical , surgical, acute, gerontology, LTC. I can work in psych here now in some departments as i now have a dementia masters cert, but i had dementia in my pre requisite and nursing as well but not as masters level.

I think the US system in training is good :) my university is partnered with USF nursing school and some students are coming over here on placement :)

CGFNS is commission on graduates of foreign nursing schools. They evaluate the credentials of internationally educated nurses (IENs) in comparison to US standards. They make recommendations to the selected state BoN as to whether of not the IEN education is substantially equivalent to US standards.

Sometimes it is not. UK nurses are most recently specialty trained in adult, pediatric, (developmental) disability, or mental health. OB/GYN is the specialty of nurse midwives. Therefor an adult trained nurse is often lacking clinical & theory in pedi, OB and psych/mental health and cannot be licensed in the US unless additional theory & coursework is completed.

I think the OP was questioning if their psych nursing education and experience would meet US standards as it was questioned by CGFNS but okayed by the BoN.

Thank you for answering that as am half asleep and got work tomorrow :) your advice has been helpful ,its 11.25 pm here ,
