After psych

It's true once you start with psych you can't get out. Or at least this is what's happening to me. I graduated with my associates in 2008 and my first job was psych. Big mistake! I want to experience other fields but nobody will hire me, as I'm not a new grad, I only have my A.S. and my only nursing experience is in psych!! So now I'm in school for my BSN, hoping that when I graduate I'll be a new grad again and be able to change fields.

I have my BSN. And I have a few months of med surg not much cuz it isn't my cup of tea :) hoping I won't be less marketable ...

I started in psych and worked it for 5 years. When I was getting low-census'd all the time I applied with another department. I had no trouble getting a job in another specialty.

I think another reason many people don't change out of psych is they love it and are motivated to do the job. It's something you either love or hate. If you love it, you stick with it.

Awe you made me feel so much better thank you :)))) I love psych before I became an RN ! What speciality did you go to? I never what to end up on med surg floor, sorry its not for me

I've done lots! I worked med/surg, geriatrics, peds, hospice, all for awhile.

I went back to psych though, and teach it now as well as work as an advanced practice psych nurse. [

Like I said, when you love it, you stick with it, even if the road is complicated to get to it!

Thank you!!! I always here that I wont be marketable after being a psych nurse, but honestly that besides forensic interests me. I really want to get my masters and teach... Can you also counsel with a master degree? NP?

I have a psych CNS. I counsel and used to prescribe (could now, but didn't renew my prescriptive authority because I moved and didn't have a job for awhile).

Thanks so much! I would like to eventually counsel / teach... I'm just nervous cuz I didn't get a yr of med surg under my belt that whole theory everyone says a new grad needs..
