new nurse/old RRT

by abgstat

I've been doing respiratory therapy for many, many years so ventilators and trachs are my specialty. But I'm new to nursing. What kind of care can I expect to give to a vent-dependent in their home?

Patients who are at home are considered to be stable. They are there because they are receiving routine care and are not expected to "get well", but only to be maintained and prevented from developing acute illness. You can expect to do routine care and spend a lot of time monitoring the status of the vent. You might be involved in educating the family members or other caregivers and will be especially suited to using your skills in troubleshooting the vent should it malfunction.
