Getting a raise in private duty nursing?

Specialties Private Duty

Published

When I worked in nursing facilities, I didn't have to ask for a raise. I would get my evaluations and then they would say something like OK, we are giving you 50 cents more an hour now. So how does it work in private duty?

Do you have to ask for a raise or do they give you a raise automatically after you have been with them for a year? Thanks.

Yes, meeting with the recruiter shows you that you are not worth the bother or respect of meeting with the nursing supervisor. After all, it is the nursing supervisor who rates your job performance as a nurse, and if they don't care about you, who will? Some recent college grad who may be earning $9 an hour?

YES, that's exactly how I feel. That's exactly what they are telling me!!!!! I think he already resents the fact that I make more money then he does.

Hi everyone, i am so glad i joined this site. I tought i was the only one who felt the recruiter was my boss. This is my story. I have been a nurse since 2005. the last 3 years as an RN. My assignment with this agency ended 06/2010 and i have been unemployed since then. I have been looking for a job everywhere ( hospital, home care etc). I was hired by lots of agncys who don't have work for me. Finally I was hired by this agency. They said they have a case for me but they pay $18/hr. So I asked the recruiter to ask the manager if they can raise my salery and he said no. He said madicaid doesn't pay so they can't raise my salery. I declined the job since it is 33% less than what i used to make. I enjoied working as home health nurse but it doesn't pay in miami. I have been having a second thought after i declined the job, maybe i should take it because times are hard and i don't know if i am going to get another job offer and am giving up hope.

Any advice from my fellow nurses. anybody knows home care or private duity agency that is hireing in miami.

If i start with $18/hr will my next job salery be based on that?

Kyasi i clicked on qudo under your comment by accident. i don't know what it is. I am still trying to learn how to navigate.

Thanks

If you work at $18/hr for this job it does not necessarily mean you are stuck at that rate, but it gives the next employer the hint that you are willing to work for that low a rate. Be glad you aren't on the west coast where they have dropped LVN hh rates to $16/hr and even lower.

I just talk to a friend of mine and she told me she was offered a job with this agency and guss how much they pay? 12/hr and she is an RN with lots of experiance. I could't belive it. I don't know what is wrong with these agencys.

Thanks for your advice caliotter3.

The agencies know that there are people out there who are desperate enough to do RN work for $12 an hour. If there weren't people who would work at this rate, the employers would find the money to pay decent wages. Some of them claim that reimbursement rates have declined, such as medicaid. Then when employees check up, they find out that medicaid reimbursement rates haven't decreased at all. Dishonesty rules.

Adia, Kudos are a good thing so I'll take it whether you meant it or not. :D

I just can't believe what I'm reading here. I interviewed a RN today and offered her $22.00 an hour to go to school with a little girl who has Seizure disorder. (8hrs/day, no weekends) She has to think about it because she didn't think it was enough and will let me know tomorrow if she wants the job. This is a Medicaid case and I can't staff it!

Kyasi I would die to go to school with a little girl for $22 an hour. While $22 an hour might be considered low for an RN, it is not out of the ball park, and I would find it very acceptable as an LVN. Too bad I'm not where you are, I would come to your office with a resume tomorrow! Seriously!

kyasi, you know how much they pay for school RN here in miami $15/hr and they might give you more than one patient. I think your offer is decent $22/hr.

I am so giving up hope whith this agencys.

I am thinking about posting an advertizment on craigslist as independent private duity nurse.

Also my boyfriend has a house in miami 5 bedroom and 3 bath and it hasn't been rented for 2 month now and am thinking opening up small ALF. maybe 5 residents. I have been trying to find out info with AHCA if the house is in approved zoning area, licensing and requirements.

Anyone who has info on this subject.

Yes, it would be nice to get away from these agencies. I too have thought about putting up my own ad on Craigslist. However, I do not know how to do so many things such as billing medicaid, taxes etc.:crying2:

You can do private duty without having a medicaid number. It just involves working for people who can afford to pay for their own care. You can do this while you go through the process of getting the medicaid/medicare situation settled. Simply find a client through advertising, draw up a contract, and begin working for them. It helps if they do the withholding for you, but if they do not, then you have to make certain you make the tax payments.

I wish I could hire you all!

The nurse never called me back so I guess she isn't interested. It's a great case too. You meet the girl at her home. Mom has her dressed and in her w/c. Hop on the bus with her. She has a seizure plan that you follow if she has a seizure during the day and other then that, the day is pretty enjoyable. The little girl is adorable. At the end of the day, Mom signs the timesheet and takes her in the house and you leave. I worked a really tough vent case for the same amount when I was doing private duty.
