Bored during home care!

Hey! This is my first post here! So I got my rn lisence in july 2015 and I'm doing home care now. My plan is to move on to a hospital but I just started college again for my bsn....so I'm going to wait a bit.

In the meantime, I'm getting great vent and trach experience but my problem is that although my case is a very busy one, there is still a good 4 hours that I'm hardly doing anything. I bring my laptop along and do school work but I need more ideas of how to use my time. Sometimes I'm soooooo bored!

Any suggestions?

Are you working nights? When I did home care I cleaned the patient's room top to bottom, it was amazing how much dust was in there and obviously not good for a trach kid.

You could also organize supplies, throw out expired meds, detail equipment, etc.

If you are bored, it may not be the right job for you. There is downtime on most cases. Most of us bring stuff to do for those times. The nurses that complain of boredom never last in the job.

If you have a good data plan, or if the families allow you their wifi password, then pick a great series and binge watch! Just this month I gobbled down three seasons of "Vikings"! I am a Girl Scout leader so I get all of my prep work done at work. I am addicted to Yahtzee for Buddies on my smartphone. I read up on the dx of the client I'm with and learn as much as I can. I read up carefully on all the meds they're on. I do yoga. I always try and keep busy with either work or leisure activities.

Youtube, books from the library, reddit, cleaning, start writing that novel

Threads like this always make me feel better. After so many years of jobs that involved a lot of running around, the ides of down time initially stressed me out. I always felt slightly guilty doing leisure activities on company time.

Thank god I got over that. I've almost caught up on reading going all the way back to graduation.

If you like to read and have a library card you can check out books on the app overdrive, I read on my phone.

I actually just found that app the other day when I was looking for a better e-reading app for my Kindle. =)
