What is taught in Nursing Fundamental class?

Hello,

I am new to the site. I am taking my very first nursing course. I wanted to know if anyone can tell me what to expect from a Nursing Fundamental class. I also wanted to know if anyone can give me suggestions on how I study for this class.

Thanks!

Your lecture for the class will likely focus on the History of Nursing, Nursing Theory, current issues in Nursing, etc. Your lab will likely be very skills oriented - how to take vitals, place a foley, shove an NG tube down someone's nose, etc.

Also, this should probably be posted in the Nursing Student forum, as the only people in this section who'd know are those of us actually in school who drop in to give advice and/or shake our heads at people.

As I recall, fundamentals at my school included topics like basic nursing theory, basic care and comfort, basic physical assessment, nursing diagnosis, ethics and legal issues, culturally competent care, therapeutic communication, infection control.

Skills included performing assessments, taking vital signs, making beds, bed baths, transferring patients without injuring yourself, other hygiene skills, and administering oral medications.

Skills like foley caths and NG tubes were done during later semesters at my school.

I'll go with "OMG, I have to take two science classes in a term," for starters.

At my first choice for nursing school Fundamentals of Nursing (Intro to Nursing 1) was a pre req that had to be taken before even being admitted to the nursing program.

It did cover the topics mentioned. If you're an NA honestly it would probably seem like common sense. I didn't even study and ended up with a high B for my final grade.

Good luck!

It is also a pre-req at my school. It is the last pre-req class before applyilying to the nursing program. I am pursing a BSN. However I recieved the course syllabus and it states that we will have to do a health history and care plan. Have you ever had to write a care plan. If so, any tips?
