What tape recorder do you prefer?

I tried to find a recent thread about tape recorders, but the most recent thread I found was 2008. So, I thought I would create another one. I'm in the process of trying to find one for my A&P class, do you have any suggestions? I have no clue what i'm looking for when I am shopping for them :-). If you could help, that would be great! Thanks!

I don't have an iPhone, but I do have an iPod (5th generation). It works really well because I can just plug it into the PC and grab the digital file.

Yes I didn't realize either until a classmate made me aware. I usually put my phone on airplane mode in settings before I start recording. That way my phone isn't vibrating from a text or call while recording on a desk near the professor.

Great tip! Ill be sure to put it on airplane mode!

Btw, make sure you ask the professor for permission before recording lectures. Some professors do not allow their lectures to be recorded. Most do at my school, but we have a few who do not.

umbdude-I also have an iPod, how do I record on that?

Very true! I just looked on our syllabus that was posted yesterday and recording is encouraged :) whew! I'm bucking my seat belt for this semester.

I use my iPad and the Notability app. It saves my recordings with my powerpoints, and I can press on any notes I've typed and automatically play the part of the lecture at that point. I can also email them to people and save them to Dropbox.

However I don't really ever do the type-syncing. I don't like using a keyboard while recording because the click-clacking is LOUD!

Ohhhh u might be on to something! I always bring my iPad to class. I think that may be best. I'm looking into this notability app now. Thanks!

Digital recorder, but make sure it plugs into a USB. I have a Sony that I bought at Walmart for about $55. I can increase or decrease the playback speed, which is also a pretty nice feature.

If you go to menu (where you see "music", "video", "photos" etc.), you'll see "Extras". Under "extras" you'll see "Voice memos". You can use that to record. I've used mine to record lectures up to 4 hours long but I charged it full the night before. Make sure you test it out before using it in class.

I have the iPod nano 5th generation, which has a built-in mic. The headphone (or a mic) is needed for recording using the new iPod nano. I'm not sure about other ipods or other generations though. This link might have more info:

Thanks a lot, I found it! :-).

I've seen people using their iPhones or various tablets. Since I had neither, I picked up a dedicated unit that hooks up to my computer via USB. Mine is the Olympus VN-81000PC. There's apparently a newer model out now. I love my little digital recorder.

I like it! It also saves me a bunch of PowerPoint lugging and printing bc I can write right on them with my stylus and then print then annotated if I feel like. But they do take up a lot of memory linked with the recordings, so I recommend putting them on Dropbox after your tests so you can delete them!
