What else can I do??

  1. Hi all! This is my first post here, Ive been a lurker for a while.

    Heres my problem...
I decided about 2 months ago that I wanted to finally enroll in college and get into the nursing program, I am married and a mother to three and have put it off for a long time now. So, I get started, have to take the COMPASS and do extremely well on it, fill out my FAFSA and all that. Everything seems to be going smoothly until I get my award letter saying that my grant is going to be $930. Now my family of 5 had an income of $41,000 last yr and it gave me an EFC of $2428. This $930 doesnt even cover the tuition and I seriously dont have the money to pay the difference plus the cost of books and then child care. Neither of the two CC's around here will accept Stafford loans either.

They gave me a list of lenders that they accept funds from and I have been denied by all of those using 3 different co-signers. I dont know whats going on. My DH is going to talk to his boss lady and see if she would be willing to make the loan to us for this first semester but if shes not willing to do that I may not be able to go.

I would like to know are there any other options as far as getting this money? I seriously want to do this and Im not willing to give up so any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

You could look into private loans. There are loans out there that send the check directly to you. I took out a Sallie Mae loan, and they send the check directly to me. I deposited it into my account, and paid the balance of my tuition with my personal check. I put it in an account that I don't dip into and I have next semester's tuition ready. I belive there are mixed reviews on this site about SM, however, I made the choice that was right for me.

If you dont mind me asking, which sallie mae loan it was that sent the check to you? That would work out if I could get past the credit part.

Okay don't laugh,.. but there are fertility clinics around that pay 5,000 dollars for egg donations. For some reason that is the only thing that came to mind.

But you are saying you can't get a personal loan?

    What about family members?

Update: I wasnt able to get a personal student loan but my DH's boss agreed to loan me the money I needed for Spring semester. Now, Im just hoping that next time I can apply and maybe get some scholarships that will help me pay instead of having to borrow from her each time.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
