Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone had any information or personal experiences with the University of Detroit Mercy.

I'm transferring there in the Fall of this year to work on my final pre-reqs so that I can apply for their nursing program for the Fall of 2009. I won't be visiting the college until its time for me to move there, so I'd love some info on what to expect.

Does anyone have any insight as to what the school is like in general? Is it's atomsphere like that of a little private college or like that of a big university? What is their nursing program like and how big is it? Are how hard are the classes in general? Do the classes have average expectations or above average expectations? (the community college I'm at now likes to make things hard)

Probably you should post this in the Michigan forum because a lot of us check in there and there have been some threads about UD Mercy so I would start by looking at those.

Post your above question in the MI forum too and I'm sure you'll get some answers. I go to Wayne in Detroit so we'll be neighbors :nuke:

I'm just curious as to what made you pick UD Mercy from so far away.... There are lots of great schools in the southeastern Michigan area to choose from. (and many with much less expensive tuition too!) I would really suggest coming to visit before you move-- some schools I thought I would love till I visited the campuses when I applied to college the first time. I've heard nice things about Mercy but you won't really know if it's the right school for you till you visit.

All schools (even giant ones like Wayne with tens of thousands of students) have fairly small nursing programs because there is a severe shortage of qualified instructors. At Wayne there are usually around 70 or fewer a year admitted to the traditional nursing program and about the same for second degree. From what I understand no matter where you go to school the nursing programs are very small and personal. You'll get to know everyone in your class to form great relationships with both them and the faculty. It's like a very small private school all to itself.

Once you're in the nursing program, no matter where you attend, the curriculum will be rigorous and challenging so I would give it 100% and not bank on people having "average" expectations. Always strive for above average as it will help secure you a spot and will earn some great recommendation letters!

Here in my home state of Washington, nursing programs are few and of such small size that even 4.0s get turned away. I figured out pretty quickly that my 3.93 GPA was not going to get me anywhere with the W.A. schools. So when I started looking into Michigan schools, UDM caught my attention when I found out that I would automatically recieve a 10K scholarship just because of my GPA (since I always dreamed of affording a private religious college this was great!) and I'll admit UDMs little slogan "We want great things for you" caught my eye, comming from a state where I'm 'just a number thats not good enough' to all the nursing programs here. When I called UDM they said that if I finished my last pre-reqs in their pre-nursing program and got decent grades, I was almost guranteed a spot in the nursing program! So, I signed up right way (this will be the last year they have a pre-nursing program that gurantees spots in the nursing program). Still, I'm wondering what UDM is like and since I've never been to Michigan, I was hoping for some insight. Sorry for the long-winded post, but I hope I gave you a good idea as to why I chose UDM. I just hope I've made the right choice! :nuke:
