thinking of switching later on

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am currently in a CC and doing very great towards transfer to a Cal State. I decided to pursue nursing because I am very happy working in the medical field and I have some financial issues in my family. It's one major that I am sure I can finish fast and grants can definitely cover. However, I do want to go to a more hardcore math and science stuff, so I am considering a major in biomedical engineering with concentration on either chemical or electrical engineering. I have no money for school, I did not graduate high school here in the US and the only record I have to present in scholarship applications is my CC transcript. I want to get my BSN, work for years, then go back to take a biomedical engineering major. My question is, will I afford going back to school if I save up as a nurse? I am definitely not afraid to go back to school and start all over again, I love school. It just happened that I am not blessed with so much money.

How is it going for you?

I'm having interest in biomedical engineering as well. Do you know about the field?

Sadly, I have no idea what Biomed Engr has to offer but I really think it is interesting. Kinda wish it's so easy to change majors. I'll stick with nursing for now

There is also another thing to consider as you look into nursing. The job market out in California can be extremely discouraging to new grads. I believe that the rate of unemployed new grad nursing students is extremely high - you should definitely assess where you'll be located and see how the job market is for newly graduated nursing students.

Yeah the job market here in California is so competitive. Im willing to practice at other states and explore my options more. Maybe go to the east coast or move up north, I really dont mind. Nurses are still in demand outside of CA, might as well try.

You're wasting time and money. Just go strait to biomed engineering if that's what you want. Saving money to go back to school is a step backward in both investments. 1 you sound like you don't know anything about biomedical engineering. You're gonna have to spoonfeed and do own research, it's a huge field but totally unrelated to nursing. 2 it's a poor investment to wait now go back later, if it's truly what you want to do. It'll be your second degree, you're gonna have to burn your saved cash and go on loans cause you aren't gonna get a dime from murica. 3. None of the courses from nursing carry over, biomed engineering is the overachiever's premed major. In the end it'll take you another solid 4 years at a UC. Consider that if you plan on going back to a UC at face value, you'll be in debt to your eyeballs. I refer to UCs as I have researched the major shortly after high school, not sure if there are other alternatives. Just look up the prerequisites on assist, it's beefier than bio/Chem majors.

Nonetheless, tldr : do what you want while you have the free monies vs wasting time and money later. Or.. Just stick with nursing and find an advanced degree to your liking.

if your needing a job bad i suggust maybe getting into a trade at the CC..
