Taking all 5 prereqs

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

Is it smart to take all 5 prereqs in one semester? Should I split them up?

What classes are your pre-req's?

What classes are your pre-req's?

There's A&P 1, Intro to Psych, Math: Quantitative Reasoning, English Comp and then a required 1 credit hr class called Student Success in Healthcare. It's with Ivy Tech btw

Specializes in LTC.

Ivy Tech has those classes laid out as one semester on the suggested sequence page. What is your plan? Will you be working while you complete these pre-reqs?

Are you applying for the ASN program, beginning in Fall of 2018? If so, you could maybe spread out all of the pre-reqs and co-reqs ~ because you will have three semesters to do so before the nursing program begins. It has been recommended to me by my nursing advisor to get as many of those classes out of the way as you can, so that you can just focus on your nursing classes & clinicals when your program begins.

Yes I plan on applying for the ASN program in the Fall of 2018, which Is why I feel like spacing everything out and making sure I do my absolute best so that come next Fall, I will be a good candidate academically for the program. Plus paying out of pocket and spacing them all out won't be so bad financially. What exactly are co reqs?

Well, I used the word co-reqs incorrectly. Lol. Because the definition of that is:

"an academic course required to be taken in conjunction with another course"

But what I meant was ~ the other classes that are required for the nursing program, but are not NRSG classes. So if you could knock out all of these before you begin your nursing program, that would be ideal. There are 10 of those classes. Spread them out over 3 semesters, and that sounds very doable to me.

However ~ the deadline to apply for the Fall of 2018 nursing program will be in the spring. It may be in your best interest to complete those five pre-reqs in your first semester... otherwise, you could be cutting it very close -- which is what I am doing. The teachers have to have their grades in on May 16 and the deadline for me to apply is May 18 at midnight. They told me if even one duck is out of line -- for example, if one teacher submits one of my grades late -- it could cause me to miss the deadline altogether. I was advised to talk to each one of them in the beginning, to try to ensure this doesn't happen.

Have you spoken with an advisor yet? Even though your plans are down the road a bit -- may be a good idea for your peace of mind. I always feel better when I have some idea what the heck I am doing. ;)

I havent spoken to an advisor yet. I have emailed one just a few days ago and I presume Tuesday is when I will hear a response based off the fact that's when Spring semester begins. Thanks for all your advice.
