SUNY Downstate Summer '09 looking for CPR class

by Kieradv

Hello everyone!

I was just accepted to the Accelerated BSN program at SUNY Downstate and was looking into CPR classes.

I found one in the city but they haven't gotten back to me yet so I figured I would see if anyone had a place that has class on Saturday or Sunday to recommend or, even better, does anyone want to find a class together so we can know a friendly face or two before we start!

Thanks for your help.

Hi! I'm also accepted in SUNY-Downstate!

I checked the AHA website recommended by the school, and found a list of BLS courses in my area. There actually is one offered through Kings County, right across from Downstate, but that's only offered once a month and none of the dates worked out for me. It looks like I'm taking a class at Maimonides hospital which is offered every Thursday night.

The list just gives you the site name and a telephone number, so you'd have to call around to find one that has dates that work for you.

Go to http://www.americanheart.org and click on CPR/ECC on the left hand side.

I go to SUNY Downstate and am in the accelerated program. I'll graduate this summer...so I'll meet you in June. Congrats on your acceptance. Prepare yourself for some hard work and many many challenges. But you will also become a better person! (I believe that is true, anyway).

You can take the CPR class at school for free. You'll sacrifice most of the day during a very very hectic summer session and it won't be the most fun day you've ever had, but if money is a concern, I recommend just taking the class at school.

Good luck and welcome.

Hello,

I was recently accepted into the Accelerated program also. Fortunately, I did a CPR course earlier this year. I did it in Queens.

I am currently applying to the accelerated program for 2010 at Suny. How hard was it to get in? what was the average NET score? Was the NET hard? What sections were in it? I'm really nervous about it because my undergrad grades were not that great, but my prerequisites were really good (avg roughly 3.7, or 3.8). I have worked in healthcare for years so hopefully I will get in. Any advice is welcome

It's hard to say what your chances are for getting accepted. High pre-req grades and healthcare experience will definitely help you. I don't know how much they'll weigh your undergrad scores if your science pre-reqs are good; I've heard that's what they really focus on.

Regarding the NET, I found it very easy. The math section is just straightforward arithmetic--make sure you know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, decimals and percentages. But there are no word problems--it's just problems like 1856 * 15%. There are basic arithmetic reviews on the web that you could use. There is also a science reading section which is a little trickier. You read a few paragraphs and then answer questions based on them. Make sure you read the questions and answer choices carefully, is all I can say. Also review the parts of speech, basic grammar, punctuation and capitalization--that is another section of the NET.

Good luck!

So I don't need to study much Science for the NET? I'm taking it Thursday and so behind. I'd love to save time and not focus on the Science if there's not much on it.

Btw, applying to Suny 2010.

Thanks in advance!

I'm still nervous about the NET. I take mine in two weeks. Let me know how it was.

Took net this morning and a previous poster was spot on- buy the $20 practice test ( online) from eri. Pretty much the exact same test.

The only difference is they leave out the basic science portion, which is short, but difficult. Yet supposedly suny doesn't look at that grade.

Good luck!
