Summer Plans

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

So I am going to attend SFASU nursing school in August. I finished all pre reqs and even some elective classes.

I'm really torn on what plans to make for my summer. I was going to work as a tech or CNA but I'm going to be taking a lot of trips with my family over the summer so I'm thinking about volunteering at a hospital or a nursing home so that I have a flexible schedule.

I was told by my cousin who has been a nurse for over 10 years and the only advice she gave me was to buy a NCLEX book and start studying.

I really want to be productive yet have a super flexible schedule.

Advice? HELP! Thanks in advance :)

Wait, so you start nursing school in the fall? I don't understand how you can start studying for the nclex without attending nursing school...you don't have the knowledge yet to answer questions! As for your other plans, volunteering is always a good option! Hands on knowledge is irreplaceable.

I disagree with the PP. It is a great idea to go ahead and start studying for the NCLEX. The NCLEX has a different format than your typical test - there tend to be multiple right answers to the question, but it's all about which question is MORE right. It's something that you will definitely have to get use to. Even though I'm not yet enrolled in nursing school, and I will also be starting the fall, I've begun to review over NCLEX-type questions. It goes over A&P sections, which are a good refresher and you can start practicing on those sections. The Saunders version is recommended by many. Good luck, and congratulations on your acceptance to nursing school.

Thank you for the responses! I really appreciate it. Thats what I'm thinking @cracklepop I think I will just try to get familiar with the format and review the questions I do know.

I understand your reasoning completely! I'm an LPN and I took the nclex last year. Obviously I cant speak for RN school and the RN nclex but my reasoning for saying not to worry right now is because the nclex isn't as hard as people make it out to be...at least in my opinion! In fact, the nclex was easy compared to nursing school tests. So if I was going to study something I would learn material for that lol but of course whatever you decide isn't going to hurt anything!

if I were to volunteer at the hospital what areas should I volunteer in?

I am keeping my summer as free as I can. I am taking a math class online this summer but am going to Dallas, Texas, then the next day after I come back from that I get to go to Hawaii for a week!!! It's the trip of a lifetime and I am so excited to go. I have put in a lot of hard work this past year and I am going to enjoy my summer before hard work begins again in the fall. Enjoy your time off!!
