Suggestions?

Hey! So I currently am a sophomore at Stony Brook University. I was planning to get into pre-med but it looks like my chances are slim. So, I plan to get into nursing school at Stony Brook. I have to take two semesters more of classes, but I plan on applying in Fall 2012. I heard that it is really competitive. My GPA is 3.43 and I have volunteered at the Stony Brook Hospital as well as the Long Island Veterans Home. I also currently work at a research facility in Stony Brook---the RSS. I am kind of scared, but I really want to get in the first time I applied since I basically wasted a year on taking med school classes. Can you guys provide some ideas on how to prepare myself as a good candidate? Thanks!

I really wouldn't count your first year as a wasted year. Depends on what courses you took. You have a lot of things going for you. Your GPA is good and you have volunteered at a hospital before so you have knowledge about how the hospital is ran. I would speak to advising and counseling. Find out how many more classes you need to switch majors to prepare you for the nursing program. Also, find out how many times a year the school accepts students. Some school only accept students in the fall. Another good thing to know is what the overall GPA is that the program is looking for. You could also ask about whether or not they have an entrance exam. There are a lot of schools that have a test called TEAS that is a requirement before entry into the nursing program. You seem to off to a great start so far. stick to this website and you will learn plenty. Good luck and let us know how you're doing. :-)

Hey! Thanks so much! I found out that I have to take about 4-5 more classes and then SBU only accepts students in the fall. So, I would apply next year. I don't have to take the TEAS, but I heard some schools require the GRE (SBU doesn't though).

akaur_2010: I highly recommend that you attend SBU's School of Nursing Information session. They will explain everything for you and at the end of the session, you have the opportunity to ask questions relating to your specific situation. This is the only way you can get your questions answered.

You have to register ahead of time, and they hold info sessions once a month. I believe it's on Fridays from 1-3 pm.
