Who has taken it? What's it like? Any tips, advice, suggestions? I'm giving the sciences a rest and taking stats and retaking intro to psych (hoping to raise a 3.0 to a 4.0).

What's the skinny?

stats was more analysis than anything else. being able to understand the formulas e.g. standard deviation, lines of progression ... you get to look at data in the form of charts, graphs... interesting class if you are into stats. don't expect things like algebra...

It all depends on the teacher I think. Mine was awesome. Bent over backwards to help us. Gave us his cell phone to call anytime.

It is a time consuming class - some of the problems would take over an hour for just one.

I agree with the PP. It is time consuming and it can depend on the profressor. Having a small class helped, too. I took it last summer (6 weeks) and there were only 6 or 7 of us, allowing the professor to give us any extra help that we needed.

Small class is great - we had 6 students too.

I found stats much less daunting than algebra - I hate math. I was scared to take it though because I heard it was hard. It was fine! The actual math is very simple. I agree with the poster who said it was time consuming. I never had any hour long problems, or even close, but I would often spend hours doing my homework. I also agree it depends on the instructor. Mine was nice and had a goofy sense of humor and would try to make us laugh. Though the jokes were terrible, the light heartedness helped everyone relax.

I dunno - even our instructor said that some problems took him 45 minutes and he was smart AND the teacher. It is pages of formulas . . . One problem written out took 2-3 pages, in small handwriting.:rolleyes:

i took stat. for a winter mini session (3 week course) ...and the professor did NOT cut corners. We had quizzes everyday, 2 exams that were 25% of our grade ..graded our homework and everything. Its challenging, but definately doable. Just practice, practice practice. I ended up spending a few hours doing every practice question the day before a final and ended up with a B. I think if I had a whole semester I wouldve done better, but hindsight is always 20/20

My teacher didn't cut corners either. He teaches at a private university. His other classes were bigger - we were just the pre-req class for the RN to BSN program. So, smaller class.

He was a great lecturer - made sure we "got it". Gave us a tool with all the formulas. He encouraged us to call him on his cell - I always felt bad about that and did the email route and would get an email back "Call me!". He is a very good and compassionate teacher.

I just finished up Stats and wound up with a B. Very disappointing to say the least!

My advice: Study every day. Don't miss a single class or you will be lost. Learn how to use your calculator efficiently. Sit toward the front of the class. Do your labs. Study every day. Study every day. Study every day.

Topic: This class was brutal, took a ton of work, barely made an A. Too many formulas, and pointless.
