Starting nursing school with a 3 year old

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi! I am a pre nursing student and I applied for the practical nursing program this September 2016. I am a little hesitant about starting this year because I have a 2 year old son but he will be turning 3 when I start the program. I have had people tell me I should wait until he is 5 and in Kindergarden. But I have been working really hard these past 2 years completing these prerequisites. I will be finished my last prerequisite next month. As I said, I applied already and I am very excited to start it. Any advice for me? Should I just go ahead and start the program this September or should I wait a couple more years?

I have 4 kids. (Oldest is 10, youngest will be 2 soon) I've been taking my prereq's for the nursing program also and my gpa last semester was a 4.0

It can definitely be done as long as you are determined, have a good support system & good time management skills. Good luck to you!😊

It can definitely be done and I say go for it!! No matter when you do it you are going to be taking on something that will have to be integrated into your life and your whole family's routine. When I start a nursing program in the fall my son will be starting kindergarten and my daughter will be a month shy of 4. I have had people suggest I wait until both of them are in elementary school for years (some even said don't start pre-reqs!) but I consistently fail to understand the logic of it. Start your program now, you will probably be done before he really needs you to put down your homework to help him with his ;)

Go for it. :bookworm: I just started school with a 7 month old. Its hard on the weekends because I'm tired but I do my work on campus or when he goes to sleep. You want this so you will make it work :)

I have a daughter who will be 3 in a few months and a special needs son who just turned 5. I just finished my last prereq while also being in an MA program. I don't know how hard it will be in a nursing program but I'm not giving up and neither should you. We can do this if we try. Don't let negative and unsupportive people discourage you as it will only make things take longer (I know from personal experience). Good luck to you! :)

I have a 6, 4, 2, year olds and newborn twins. My husband is also a wounded warrior. It's going to be hard but worth it. The longer you put it off the longer it'll be until you have a career for your family

Good luck. You have your hands full :yeah: I agree with the part about putting it off. My son will be around 4 when I'm done. I'm glad to be doing it when hes really young.

How do you deal with being away from your kids? Hes with my mom while I'm in class but it's hard. It mqkes me feel sad and lonely. I'm in class 4 days a week.

That's good. I don't have a car right now and my little sister goes to the same college so he spends the night with my mom around 3 nights out of the week so I only have/see him a couple nights and weekends

Oh no! That's got to be so hard! Keep on pushing Momma you are doing the best you can to give him a better life later! Can you take more online classes? I only have two on campus this semester.

It is hard because I've been with him 24/7 since he was born. I don't have a computer so I have to wait until I get internet since I already have a laptop.
