Spring 2018: UT Health Science Center Houston

Students School Programs

Published

Hey ya'll!

I am an applicant who applied to UT Health Science center for the Fall of 2017. I found the allnurses forum so useful for all of the students that were currently going through the same process was.

I wanted to start another forum for the next year for all the applicants so they were able to share ideas, stats, background etc.

So i'll start:

HESI A2:

A&P 80

Math 98

Grammar 94

Reading 92

Vocab 96

I have a previous degree from Texas State University in Psychology (Bachelors).

Science GPA: 3.812

Nursing Pre-req: 3.512

Cumulative (155hrs): 3.2

I hope this helps and you get as much out of this as I did. I met some really awesome people on here who are all on the journey to becoming great nurses. Don't hesitate to say hi!

I'll check back in once I make mind mind up whether or not I'm going to apply again. I think after 2 failed attempts to UTMB I'm throwing in the towel with them, but may try UTHealth for the 3rd time. I've also struck out twice with IT A, but have tried for a 3rd time. I need something to happen soon though. I could've knocked out another bachelor's in the time I've been waiting on nursing school.

That's what I'm thinking too.. Something I keep thinking of should I go ahead and start taking classes for bachelors degree.. I'm scared to loose time

Man, I am right there with you. I could have had my Masters already. But I think its admirable that you aren't giving up on it ya know? If it's something you want to pursue you'll make it happen. I really think you should consider retaking some classes. I totally understand the hesitation though. It's like, if I do all this extra work and I still don't get in what was the point? I am retaking comp 1 and Intro to Psych at HCC starting June 6th and its only a month. Maybe look into that? If I recall you did really well on the HESI so you probably wouldn't need to take that again.

Yeah, I totally get that. I feel like the years since I have started this journey have come and gone so quickly. I will give you some advice based upon my experience. If you are going to get your Bachelors in something other than nursing, get something that is more of a technical degree. I got my degree in Psychology and I can't do a thing with it unless I get my Masters. Bachelors aren't enough anymore to get a good job it seems like. It's all about a Masters unless you have a degree that you can technically apply like Engineering, Nursing, Computer Software, etc.

Very good advice. I've been discussing this with my oldest daughter lately. She's extremely intelligent and I think she'll be able to go to whatever school she chooses, but make sure to get a degree that is in demand and marketable. My first career I worked with a guy who had a psychology degree, and I promise what we did had nothing to do with psychology. We often discussed him regretting that path, but he couldn't complain too much since he was making six figures in his first year with us. That is an exception and not the norm.

I have over 160 hours and only an Associates in Computer Science to show for it(changed major a few times). I need to sit down and figure out what direction I want to go while I patiently wait to get accepted into a nursing school.

You sound like you are in a really similar place that I'm in. I have like 155 credit hours (161 after this summer) with grades that range from W-A's. I want a career path that is lucrative and stable. I work in a clinic now and really enjoy what I do. But I want to be more on the medical side of things. Plus I hate sitting at a desk all day. I need a job that keeps me on my feet and active.

You'll get in man. I've been working on this about as long as you have and I think it gets to a point where you need to take a step back, collect your thoughts, and figure out how to go about this realistically and practically. I got to a point where I didn't want to take anymore entrance exams or retake anymore classes because people with even lower GPA's and stats were getting in. I thought if they could then there is no need for me to. BUT, our transcripts show our academic history (good/bad) as opposed to some who have literally only taken pre-req hours to get into this program. So retaking our classes and retaking our entrance exams are where our opportunity is going to be for us to shine. Otherwise, we either won't stand out or our transcripts will make us appear as inconsistent (mine at least with all of the W's). So keep pushing through. If this is what we want we will find a way :)

Hi everyone! Received my denial for Fall 2017 today, so I decided it was appropriate to become an active member on this forum. I know I will receive the utmost support from you all and vice-versa! Can't wait for this journey together!

I also just received a denial from UT Health on May 31st. I was very disappointed because it was my #1 choice but I still have two other schools I applied to for the fall so if I don't get into either of them I will better my GPA and HESI score and try again in the spring. Good luck to everyone else!

Hi everyone! I know that it was discussed on the Fall 2017 thread about how there's no rhyme or reason to their selection criteria, so I was hoping to get your opinion on retaking some classes. Which ones would be worth retaking? Should I even bother at all, and just save my time and money instead? (FYI, I plan on also applying to TWU which goes by a more clear-cut point system regarding GPA and test scores.)

Microbiology = B: Taken 8 years ago, and if I could bump that up to an A, that'll give me a "more competitive" 4.0 science prereq GPA.

U.S. Govt = C: Taken many years ago, also.

TX Govt = C: Same as U.S. Govt.

Thanks so much! Good luck to everyone for this next application round!
