Spring 2017 Chat

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Now that January is here, I thought I'd start a thread where we can support and encourage each other through our Spring semester, similar to our Fall thread, but with a bit more chit chat. What's your schedule look like? Any other goals you're working on?

I go back on the 17th, though I have a Phi Theta Kappa meeting on the 13th.

My schedule is:

A&P II

Microbio

Federal Government

World Religions

The last two are online.

Right now I'm trying to lose this holiday weight, so I've started running again (it burns). I graduate at the end of this year! In December I'll have my EMT-B certification and my Associates of Science in Biology. I'll also be applying to nursing school (application deadline is August 1), so it's going to be a really exciting (busy) year for me! I'm hoping to use my EMT-B cert to become an ED tech during the summers.

I look forward to chatting with you guys this semester!

And to be honest I'm not a fan of curves because they distort reality. My teacher is tough, he's head of engineering/science/mathematics and has a horrible rep. I'm the type of student that does well with any teacher because I learn easily from books.

Do your nursing professors use a curve? I'm prepared to be graded without one in nursing school ☺️

There are NO curves and NO extra credit in nursing classes. In my school, there are also NO papers or easy assignments that you could get points off of. We are only graded based on our test scores. Most schools pick an outrageously high number to be an A (such as a 94 or 95), meaning you can only get 2-3 questions wrong each test, if you still want that A. I personally have not met anyone in my program who has gotten an A so far, highest grade was an A-. Hardest part about nursing school was not the material, but the questions. But once you learn how to answer them and what to focus on, you should be fine. Good luck!

I am so thankful, yet frustrated at the same time! Winter quarter is coming to an end and I thought this would be the very last of my nursing prerequisites... Nope. I received an email from my adviser telling me that my general psychology class from Mt Hood Community College in Gresham, OR was only 4 credits and that Lower Columbia College in Longview, WA requires 5 credits. Luckily, LCC has created a one-credit buffer psych class for students like me.

Long story short: I'm registered for one credit in the Spring quarter. Haha.

So I'm in the final stretch of pre-reqs: I'm taking CHM, MICRO-BIO, and PATHO. I have to say I am utterly overwhelmed because I'm taking all of these on the 8 week program so I can finish in time to apply before the May 31st deadline. The CHM class has a lab too. I have to turn in at least 1 assignment per class every Wednesday and Saturday.

Although I have taken and passed several BIO classes, including API&II, I'm finding PATHO very tough because it has thrown us straight in at the deep end with medical terminology, medications/drugs, and their impact on the body. For example, tonight's assignment was about a patient with diabetes and chronic congestive heart failure, RX digitalis and insulin, presents with abdominal pain and cramping, hyperactive reflexes; ECG shows a prolonged PR interval, widened QRS and depressed ST segment.

Ummmmmm - OK......are we really expected to understand this level of patient care/medications/symptoms at this stage? I've never stepped foot in a nursing school yet....!!! I was able to cobble together an answer, and in fact this exact question is available online with answers, but that just gets me the answer - I want to understand it rather than just copy off something online!

I'm taking my classes online, so it's extra tough as I don't have a tutor to ask (in real-time, anyway)

Quick question: does anyone know if you need your CPR/ALS certificate to apply to nursing school, or is just required before classes begin?

I think it varies, but at my school we don't have to get our CPR cert until clinicals start (next spring for me). I haven't seen any nursing schools require it to apply, though.

Here you have to complete it before classes begin. It's part of the formal acceptance process.

I just ordered my honor's stole for graduation! Less than two months and I'll finally have my first degree :)

Congrats!! I am hoping to order an honors stole when I graduate as I didn't get great grades with my first bachelors....graduated with 3.0 LOL

Hey guys! I see that I am late to the discussion I hope that everyone is doing well. I can't believe that this semester is half way over! I will be applying to BSN programs at the end of this year and I am so excited!

For this semester I am taking:

English Comp I

A&P II with Lab

Lifespan Development

College Algebra

Statistics

I still haven't taken any humanities that I need for the AA ugh

Just got finished with a hellish week of midterms! Got 4 out of 5 grades so far (94, 100, 95, 98, 94) just waiting on A&P2 lab. That cat is going to be the death of me, the smell! I put in my application for nursing school last week, but won't hear anything back until the end of May. 6 weeks to go until summer!

Disposable face mask and tea tree oil, or if you wanna skip the mask, go with some mentholatum/vicks in your nose ;) works wonders!

Grats on the awesome grades!

that's a pretty heavy load. I tried to avoid taking science and math together, and you're taking three at one time!

Just noticed I put my 94 twice, lol! Looooong week. I can't believe I didn't think about Vicks or something. The strong chemical smell plus the cat just knocks me sick.
