Spring 2008 NYU Applicant No Pre-reqs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

I didn't see a thread specific to my situation so I thought I would start one.

I applied for Spring 2008 for NYU's Accelerated Second Degree BSN but I have very few of the pre-reqs completed. I was told it would take me one semester longer but I could still do it much faster their way.

Is anyone else in this situation? Any acceptances letters coming in yet? Anyone else questioning their ambition to go to nursing school?

Also, does anyone know what semester you take med-surg at NYU? I hear once you complete that you can start applying for summer externships, which means $$$ coming in.

Thanks in advance!

hi there suzyhull, i haven't heard anything yet. they said they're starting to mail out decisions and it'll go out until the end of december.

Hi everyone. I haven't heard back yet either. I gave them a call on the 16th to see if a decision had been mailed out to make sure I didn't miss it and they said my application was still under review. ARGH! It was hard enough waiting until the 15th but now it's the 26th and no word yet. They should have posted up December 1 so we wouldn't be expecting it by Nov. 15th.

Btw, my first degree was in psychology, and while I love the subject matter, there isn't much that can be done with a Bachelors degree. Without a Masters, scope is limited so I thought I'd switch over. Besides, I realize now I like to keep busy and get quick results. Psychology has a lot of waiting attached to it, so I'm realizing it may not be the exact field I need to be in. I see Psychiatric Nursing is an option, so I may consider that to put the two backgrounds together.

How about the rest of you? (Sorry for the long post, must be the nervous energy!!)

Hi all. So after a lot of wishful waiting, I found out the other day that I was admitted to NYU. They had sent the letter off on the 16th and it arrived on the 20th. I'm not too sure when they will be sending letters out until but I wish you both the best of luck and hope to meet you in January.

A bit of background about myself.. My first degree was in English Literature and International Studies and I'm hoping to eventually go onto an advanced practice nursing degree in either anesthesia or community/international health. I'm currently living in San Francisco and am ready for a change of scene and it's coming up really soon which is a little scary but so be it.

Good luck again!!

i didnt get in

good luck

Sorry to hear that Deevee. U definitely deserve to be a nurse.:(

I'm taking the prereqs at NYU now for one term. Take it anywhere besides NYU because you'll end up saving a lot of money and there really isn't a difference. I don't particularly like NYU at all. I'm starting clinicals in spring of 2008. I took the BCLS CPR class and they never even sent me a certification card and they don't reply to my emails. The school is really inefficient and the classes get full like Nutrition.

It's definitely not 36k/yr worth. Anyway, if u have any questions I'll answer them if I can. Feel free to IM me, too - my sn is lilkaymin.

Good luck. :( And yes I'm overly pessimistic.

Devee, I'm so sorry to hear you didn't get it. Did you apply to any other schools?

I may be in the same boat as you soon. I only applied to NYU... mostly because it was a free application. Funny to think that I had to think twice about an application fee, but I'm willing to put myself hugely in debt just to attend NYU.

I don't know... it seems like the longer I wait, the more I think I'm not cut out for this field. That I should just stay at my current psych research position and bear it, even though I hate it. I hope an answer comes soon. Even if I don't get it, at least I'll know.

Lilkaymin, your thoughts were my exact doubts. Is it worth 36k/year? I seethe nurses are coming out of community colleges and getting the same positions, with no student loan debt. Is that a better option?

Ugh, this is torture. I'm going to call again to see if they've sent out a letter yet.

Hi NYBSNHopeful,

It's okay. I'm getting over it. I just wanted to start on my nursing career ASAP. I applied to Johns Hopkins so hopefully there's a chance there. I have a psych degree and love my research in behavioral psych.. however I have always enjoyed medicine. I want to work in clinical research so I will do that until I get into a nursing school.

Good luck with NYU. You should be hearing from them soon. I have all the qualities to become a great nurse.. and more.. so I'm not worried. :) I'll just keep doing what I do.. and whatever is meant to be will be. Let me know how it goes!

Well those community college nurses only receive ASN. NYU is really biased against ASN. You get paid more with a BSN and u can advance to a further degree at NYU like masters. So a BSN is definitely worth it if u want to go up the nursing ladder.

If u think about it, u can easily make up the debt you receive within a year or two, so it's definitely worth it.

In fact, one of hte new students is all ready a RN and is attending NYU just to get a BSN. I'm guessing she wants to be a NP.

Do nursing if u want to be in the field and don't let the tuition scare you. I'll be around 70k in debt. But it's worth it to me.

Hi, I just got admitted as a transfer student for the traditional BSN program! So I will be at NYU this spring finishing up prereqs before clinicals. This all seems very surreal!

Anyone else hear back yet? I'd love to meet some other future (or current!) NYU nursing students!

Hi. Congrats. I'm actually finishing up the prereqs right now and starting clinicals in the spring. What prereqs are you taking? Maybe you can buy some of my books.:)

Hey I got admitted to start next month at NYU's accelerated nursing program. I'm all finished with the prereqs to start the nursing program but am having cold feet about the debt! I got into 3 other programs that don't start until next May and are about half as much as NYU. Anybody else feeling the same way?

Hey lilkaymin, I actually don't know what classes I will be taking next semester (not until NYU sends me more info about advising, registration, etc) but I will let you know when I do! And if the same books are being used I would love to buy them off you, haha.

rumia66, I'm waiting for my financial aid package, have you gotten yours yet? The debt will be a headache, I hope the NYU reputation is worth it! Does anyone know whether the financial aid stuff will be sent to my mailing address or my home address?
