Should I join Phi Theta Kappa Inernational Honor Society

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I have been offered membership into Phi Theta Kappa. It cost $60 and I have to go to an induction meeting. I am wondering is it worth it to join this honor society? Does anyone else belong? What are the benefits?

I am asking myself the same question LOL. I do not know anything about this program and my algebra professor offered it to me. In my school it costs 75$.

I'm sure it would look good on a resume!

I wondered the same thing. I wasn't sure what real benefits would come from joining. Since at the moment I have neither discretionary money nor time for such things, I thought it might not be worth it, si ignored the offer. I thought the Presidents/Deans list would be enough .. and those are free.

PTK is helpful if you are planning on going on for a Bachelors they have scholarships for members only and plus it looks good on your applications. I would join if offered.

Yes! Join as soon as possible! I am a member of PTK, it looks great on college applications and scholarships. It proves that you are a dedicated student and that you have had a consistent excellent GPA!! Congrats! :yeah:

i'm a member of ptk, and i served as president of my chapter for a while. my school gave me a scholarship while i was taking classes there, so i basically went to school for free thanks to it. plus, there were travel opportunities to conferences within my state, and the international convention in nashville, tn last year. it was pretty cool.

i'm hoping that this will help me to get ptk scholarships in the future. i do know people who have benefitted in the past with some pretty decent scholarships from being members of ptk, but only active members. just signing up for it and never getting involved won't really help you too much. : ) good luck!

A little off topic, but what kinds of stuff do you actually do? Are there regular meetings? Thanks for the info!

It depends on the school and chapter. Some are more active than others. There are four "hallmarks," which they focus on, Service, Scholarship, Leadership and Fellowship. So we would usually plan activities surrounding these topics. We participated in Relay for Life, did fundraisers around the school, and had many functions for PTK and non-PTK members to attend. Sometimes it was just fun stuff, like going to a haunted house, and sometimes it was scholarly, like showing the movie "An Inconvenient Truth," with a discussion afterward. The conferences usually consisted of seminars and leadership topics. You could really be as involved as you wanted, doing a little, a lot or nothing at all. But I really enjoyed it, a lot more than I thought I would. It was hard to do nursing school, work and serve as president, though, so I had to give it up. :(

A couple of girls at my school joined & they did get to graduate with a nifty orange stole, but they couldn't name anything else they gained other than the right to put it on their resume. I was asked to join every semester while I was in school, I by no means had extra money to join so I didn't. If someone wanted to know my grades during school all they had to do was ask for a copy of my transcripts.

What would be nice is an organization who recognizes your outstanding accomplishment WITHOUT charging you for something you did not them.

Do what you feel is best for you, and congrats on the good grades, keep it up!!!

Well, there are reasons for the fees. And most of the time, it's a one-time fee, and it's not outrageous. However, I have to agree with Gigglz to an extent. If you join just to have it noted on your degree and you never do anything further with the society, then it's really not worth it, in my opinion. Most of the people who join do this. I have seen people get recognition and scholarships for being in Phi Theta Kappa, but only if they were actively involved.
