Should I go to nursing school

No apply for anything else in healthcare. Pharmacy, PA, med school, Respiratory, OT, or PT. That's the most honest advice I can give you and already give my children.

Maybe shadow a nurse and a few other professions. There are going to be Debbie downers in every profession. There isn't anything that is perfect. You just have to find something that works for you and go into it with realistic ideas of what a typical work load will be like.

Hi Mom to 4! Thank you for your response. Can you give me a little more specific reason why not healthcare? I'm only been in the US 2 years and a half now so there are so many things I don't know.:)

Nursing is a wonderful profession. Yes it can be under appreciated and stressful. However it is rewarding. It definately isn't for everyone though. I would shadow a nurse if you're worried about it not being for you. Nursing isn't something you should go into for money.

I've Been a prenursing/ nursing student since 2010. I've been working for almost a year. I absolutely love working as a nurse.

I enjoy interacting with my Pts. I enjoy collaborating with the doctors. I enjoy the camaraderie between myself and my coworkers.

There are difficult aspects of the job, catty coworkers, a seemingly endless list of job responsibilities, exposure to lice, hepatitis, etcetera.

But, right now, I can say I feel so blessed to have a job I enjoy while making good money.

Your career choice is a very personal choice that cannot be decided by strangers on the internet. Shadowing some nurses in various settings would probably be helpful. Good luck!

I agree with others about shadowing a nurse especially if you haven't had a job in healthcare yet. Nursing can be an unappreciated and stressful job at times, but it is also very rewarding. You will get those certain patients that will make the stress worth it.

Should you go to nursing school? Well if you want to be a nurse that is how it is done. If you don't want to be a nurse then I would say maybe there are better majors out there. Or jobs. Like marine corps sniper. I am a nurse, but sometimes I wish I was a professional dreamer.

I can't say whether you should do nursing.

However I will say this as a current nursing student, being a nurse is like being a mom. Pay is crap in comparison to other professions (except education) and your reward is the great feeling of helping someone. Plus, you have to be able to be pooped on, vomited on, and peed on without batting an eye. If that sounds wonderful to you then nursing is your career. I love it. But like any career, there are bad things and good things, so what matters is if it is a passion or not for you. If money is your motivator then no, bad choice.

One warning, nursing school is like 2 years of Medical School and the rest of college does not compare to the work load that it entails. Just an FYI.

Nursing is a Wonderful and Rewarding Profession. BUT......................... It is not for every Tom, Dick or Jane. It takes a very special person who has a high tolerance for long hours, little rest and very little thanx. My suggestion is to talk face to face with a few nurses, in all settings. And as Little Candles said. You don't do it to become rich.
