  1. Is anybody taking Rio Salado courses this semester? If so post back and tell what you think about it. Maybe some of us are in the same class.

I am doing Rio this semester and I did it last semester. I *love* it. It's flexible but I feel the classes are just as great, if not better, than in person. In person classes bore me. I like having my lecture that I can read (so I don't space out) and then take notes and surf the web for related websites.

I did accelerated Bio 156 and psych 101 last semester. Did chm in person. This semester I'm doing principals of nutrition and Bio 201 which i started on Jan 10th. I have 2 prereqs left which I'll do after the 1st two blocks which I'm schedule to start in May.

    What about you?!

So glad to see that so many people have been to Rio. I like my classes, but so far I am not a fan of their new rio learn system, Most of my classes are on the old system. I might drop the course on the new system.

New system? Do you mean Perception? What don't you like about it?

I am taking Algebra and Med. Terminology this semester. I did math and PSY101 last semester. So far I really like it. Since I work full time there is no way I would be able to go to a class, and this lets me work ahead if I want to. Good luck to everyone

Where are you starting your blocks at? Are you doing one of the skill centers? I thought you had to have bio 202 done before starting the RN program at the CC's.

I am taking Bio 202 and FON 241. I will be applying in April for the RN program. Is anyone applying for the RN program at Rio?

Yea, I'm going to be at southwest skills center, you don't need prereqs. So I'll have bio 202 and 205 to finish before I can enter the 3rd and 4th blocks. Also, at the skill center they aren't going to have the 3rd and 4th blocks until like 2007 or 08 so I will do those blocks somewhere else. I hopefully will do the accelerated program at maybe gateway or if glendale has one. the one I'm doing at skill center is also accelerated.

How easy/hard is it to get into the Rio nursing program? Is there a lottery/wait like at GCC? I'd love to hear all about it if you get in, it sounds like a good option for me to consider also when trying to do that last year.

Yea it is like GCC. In fact the app is the same for all of the Maricopa CC's. You just select your choices. I think that it is easier to get into block 3 than block 1. Probably alot of people drop out in 1 and 2. Not sure how long the wait is. I was told that if you are very flexible (i.e., make all the allowed choices -- I think you have 6) you might get in the first time.

How long did you wait to get in at SWSC? I am taking my CNA class there next month. I have done all of my prereqs, except bio 202 which I am taking now so it makes sense for me to go into the RN if the wait isn't too bad.

Yea, the counselor at gateway told me it is easier to get into block 3, she said you just choose the school you want to go to and apply, you don't have to do the "pick 3" and waitlist/lottery thing.
What other schools besides Rio are going to be your choices?

I started my process with SWSC last summer, I think sometime in like June. I took the test, and then turned in all my paperwork. My "start" date is Feb 22, but they are putting the HCC's and CNA in the beginning of the program so the LPN program doesn't officialy start until May. So I guess you could say my wait was about a year. but I am getting a bunch of my RN prereqs done in the meantime so it's worked out.

Are you doing the day CNA class? You'll have to let me know how it goes. I start that at the end of march after the HCC's are over with.

So you must have done your HCC's with RIo? Was there a lot of homework or was it pretty simple?

I took A&PI and II, Micro, and Math 151 through Rio and think it is awesome. You usually turn in all your homework on the Sat (before 12:00am Sunday morning) after a lesson starts, except with accelerated classes which usually have both Wed and Sat due dates. Besides my math class, which used coursecompass.com as its platform, turning in the assignments was really easy. Usually you have multiple choice and short answer quizzes that are due during the semester as homework. Usually essays are also due also but serve mainly to force you to incorporate what you learn into your career or daily life. 40% of your essay grades depends on giving information on how what you learn can be applied. Overall, the essays helped me understand the material better rather than just remembering it all like a machine. The best part is that the midterm and finals are usually part multiple choice and part essay, with the essay questions consisting of questions ("assess your learning" ?'s) that you have already been given. The midterm covers the first half of the class and the final only the second half............................I turned in and completed my nursing app on March 26th so heres to hopin I get in!

I am doing the Rio thing too and have two classes left that I need for my pre-reqs. I have been doing about 10-13 credits non-stop since October.
