Rejection a 2nd time!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am sad today:cry: my bestfriend and one of my other friends did not get accepted into the nursing program again for the second time!! She is really bummed out so I am being supportive of her. But she kind of got upset with me because I suggested that she do something else in the mean time. She went on and on about how nursing is her dream and she is not giving up.I explained to her that I am not telling her to give up on her dreams but to merely to be realistic, major in something else until she gets in the program because this is the second year of taking random classes to get a liberal arts degree. I'm just trying to get her to realize that she is a single mother and she needs to work again. This will be the second year of her not working. But at the end of the day I know she is in pain from being rejected again and I will be here to support her 100%:icon_hug:. Am I wrong to suggest that she major in something else in the mean time.

I'm sure you meant well. She may just be in too much pain to think ahead right now. And I'm guessing you're a nurse or in nursing school, so unfortunately she may not want to hear much of what you have to say right now anyway (it's people like you that kept her out, she might be thinking). I have been in a similar situation and the more I said the worse it got--I wish you the best of luck. I can tell you care about your friend so I know your friendship must be strong.

One of my best friends made it into the nursing program with me last semester--she failed and I felt bad about passing. The truth is just over 50% of people fail, they told us at orientation to look at the person next to us that they would prob not be there come graduation. I thought that was crass but so far it has been true.

I feel her pain. It has taken me 2 years to get accepted into an RN program. During that timeframe, I attended LPN school which I feel will be a great advantage for me. Maybe she should take a CNA class which will help her incorporate her nursing skills, allow her time to work in the field and get paid, and more importantly get her mind thinking nursing. She will get in, she should not give up.

I have talked to people who have gone through several nursing schools before they were able to complete their degree. Usually these are people who had to drop out and/or flunked out for various reasons.

If your friend's acceptance into nursing school has been denied twice now, I guess I'm wondering what the reason for that is. If it's because of grades, she may need to try a different school. In my view, some schools have far more competitive criteria for admission than others. If she needs to raise her GPA, she may need to re-take some classes, and/or spend the next year taking other classes (even unneeded electives if necessary) to raise her GPA. I actually had to do that myself for the year prior to my starting nursing school. (ie, even though I had straight A's in all my nursing pre-req classes, my cumulative GPA was still too low for admission.)

I also know of another student who flunked out after the first year. As she was preparing to re-register the following year to start over, an academic advisor at our school gave her the wrong date to be assigned for registration. As a result, she actually missed the registration deadline and is now having to wait another entire year all over again. But she's still determined to go back next year.

Anyway, about your friend: I say if she's determined and willing to do what it takes, more power to her! I'm about to finish my two-year associate's, and at this point it has actually taken me over 4 years to do so (due to various circumstances). Your friend may need to do something else for the next year or so, but as long as she is willing and able to do so, there's no reason why she can't go back at some point in the future.

I'm sure you've already thought about or discussed all these things with her, but I hope this helps.

thanx for all the responses. Our cc does the lottery system as long as you have a 3.0 gpa your fine. It's basically luck. One of my friends got in, this is her second time. My bestfriend is doing a little better today and she is going to try for a LPN:yeah:so she can start gaining experience and earning a paycheck:up:. kreaglin100, I am a former pre-nursing student, I changed my major to Speech Pathology but I am still happily addicted to Allnurses.com:yelclap:

why did you change your major to speech

That's the way to do it. Never give up. All good things come to those who wait. By pursuing LPN, she will gain lots of experiences she can take with her on her RN journey.

I volunteered at my son's elementary school and they put me with the speech therapist and I absolutely loved it. I had been having doubts about nursing for a few months so after volunteering I saw that it was something I would love to do. I'm glad my prereqs werent a total waste, I took all my nursing prereqs and the only one I didnt need for speech pathology was microbiology. All my friends are still nursing majors though.
