don't become a nurse for the money. if that is the sole reason that you are doing it then you're a big fool and you should start saving your money because you will be going back to school to train for another profession, as you will end up disgusted with this one.

i went into nursing because i had an overwhelming feeling that i had to be helping people. it was a spiritual thing. from it you will experience great spiritual growth. for me, nursing is and always will be a selfless giving of my own energy to help others in their time of despair, sadness and hopelessness without the expectation of anything in return. let me reiterate that most of the time no one is going to recognize the sacrifices that you will make for your patients. if you can't handle that, don't get into this career. if you need kudos and pats on the back all the time to verify your self-worth as a nurse you need to go into another line of work. i think this was primarily why it was religious orders that initially were the nurses, doctors and healers. they gave and only expected a reward that would come much later after life. however, i must say that when you are confident in what you are doing, rewards come to you in many different ways, in many different forms and at unexpected times. if money is your preferred form of reward then you'll miss most of the prizes that will come your way since you'll fail to not only recognize them, but to appreciate them.

Im new to this site, and have many questions....looking for help, direction, etc. The career i have now at a lab, is limited and there is no possibility for promotion without furthering my education. So i was considering nursing because #1. Im already in the medical field (lab-8 yrs), #2. like u, im looking for job stability and #3. a higher paying job. I have no idea what nurses salaries can start off, even an as an LVN then bridging over to RN...can someone give me some idea what i might be looking at as far as Salaries go. And also how i know this is for me, how can u tell? Im a single mother of 3, but my children are pretty much grown, youngest 13, so im not a spring chicken...going back to school at my age is a huge step, but i know it is the right step, just want to step in the right direction.:innerconf

I want to be a nurse because I enjoy people.

I want to make a difference in the society, maybe not doing brain surgery, but encouraging the patient that she/he will make it through whatever.

I also see this career as helping me spread the word of God to those who are lost.

I'm 45 yr. old. I've been a stay at home mom for 19yrs and during that time i've home schooled both my kids! Its time to begin a new season...and i'm wanting to be a RN!

When I was 14 my boyfriend had this ugly infection that was eating him up. There were cysts/boils/pimples all over his body from it. Well the Dr. Lanced them and drained them but after he was discharged he needed the dressings for them changed... Needless to say I was the one who changed them and made sure that he took his meds on time and I was very into the whole thing. It got me excited about humans. (before that I wanted to be a Vet.) So after that I wanted to take part in nursing... for people that is...

Right after my husband and I got married (16 years ago), I got a job working in a hospital. I worked there for 12 years and LOVED it. I had never really considered being a nurse, but as the years progressed in the medical field I realized I wanted a career in that field. I ended up having 4 children and became a medical transcriptionist, but am still not satisfied. I love helping people and enjoying caring for others. My youngest is getting ready to go to kindergarten and I decided it was finally time to go after something for myself. In my experience, nurses are amazing people. They care for others and show them compassion when they need it most. I can't wait to make a difference in someone's life. The fact that I will be able to make a good living for my family doesn't hurt anything either. I applied to the spring 2011 nursing program at a local cc, but if I don't get in that semester I will be applying again in spring for the fall quarter and will most likely get in. I can't wait to start my journey as a nurse.

I never really considered becoming a nurse until about 4 or 5 years ago. I just knew I didn't want to do what I was doing for so long, which was going nowhere. I remember that when I was about 7 yrs old, I had to get my tonsils taken out. Had to stay at the hospital for a day, I think. The nurses there were awesome. They took really good care of me and made the hospital quite pleasant and even fun. I don't remember the doctor, but I remember the nurses that were there for me. That says a lot. Nurses impact people's lives more than people realize. I want to help people, and becoming a nurse will help me do that in a lot of different ways. I'm so excited and can't wait to start nursing school.
