Reading before class officially begins

does anyone start reading on their textbooks before class even starts and does this help any? i figure my summer micro class will be based a lot more on lecture/notes but since it is only a 5 week class i have started getting familiar with textbook, should have it knocked out before class starts in two weeks. couldn't hurt and i have the time.

I start Micro in two weeks too. My package came with a small book called "Get Ready for Micro" that gives you a good brush up on math, chemistry, terminology and basics of Micro. It looks like it will be perfect for me to use for the next couple of weeks.

Does your school package your books in plastic and say you can't open them until class begins or you won't be able to return them if needed? That bugs me greatly-I'm always eager to look through my books. I got the ones for this class from another source.

I'm with you. I do it all the time. Our MedSurg prof told us yesterday not to read ahead and enjoy the summer and we were like "what?" I KNOW how overwhelming new content is, I will be reading ahead. At the very least understanding pathophysiology of major disease-PVD, Diabetes, CardioVascular stuff, et cet.

I really believe that even being familiar with terminology is beneficial, and if you have the time, why not?

Nope. That would suck, how are they going to tell if you opened the plastic early anyway, not give you the book to the day class starts.

That would be really helpfull as the book I'm stuck with is pretty complex and with no background in the terminology and no selected defined words at the bottom of each page like some books I am stuck searching the glossery every few pages.

Our books are shrink wrapped so there's no way to open them without destroying the plastic. :(

"Get Ready for Microbiology" is by Lori K Garrett and I think it would be worth your money to see if you can get it quickly from Amazon. Wish I could send you a copy! :)

I always do this! It helps me to read before-hand!

Yes, I have already started my Book notes ( on chapter 3 now) and some problems at the end of the 1st two chapters for GOBC.
