New pre-nursing student...Scared!

  1. Hi all. I'm new here. I'm 27 yrs old, married with 2 kids. I'm starting pre-nursing school on Thursday and I am scared to death! I am so afraid I won't be able to do it. I was never good in math and I have been out of school for a while. I 'm so anxiety ridden it's hard to sleep. ANY ADVICE?
    Thanks....Rei

I was the same way when I first started back. I was excited at first but then when it came time for me to start school I got really scared. The first few weeks of school were really stressful for me. I wanted to drop out. It just takes a while to get comfortable with school and the change in your life. You also will get more confidence in yourself after you complete a few assignments and make it through your first exams.

Just try to take some deep breaths and make it through the first week or two and you will be fine.

You can do anything you set your mind to do.

I'm not strong in math at all, but with determination I got through it. ( My college has a success center that offers free tutoring and I took them up on the offer. I learned more in 12 weeks than I learned in 4 years of high school)

Just take school day by day and you'll be fine , best of luck and congratulations on your new start to school!

Thanks everyone I appreciate all of your kind words and advice. I got my books today and a bookbag, comp books and folders. I am excited to a degree but mostly sick to my stomach with worry. I will continue to post here and hopefully be able to help others too when I can.

sit front and center so you must pay attention, don't be afraid to ask questions, utilize any free tutoring services that are available and don't overload your schedule for the first couple of terms. You need to get into the pattern and gain a comfort level balancing family and school before you try to cram too many upper level classes in. If there seems to be someone in your class that excels find out what they are doing and learn from them. Good luck, take it one day at a time and you'll be just fine!

You know what just go with the flow. Since you have a family and all, make sure that you schedule your classes right. You'll need time to study, do hw, and get a piece of mind. Don't listen to negative people!!! Brush up on your math skills a little bit because you've had bad times with it. Whenever you're stuck please, please, go to tutoring and tell your professor that you need some help. Don't be shy because that's why they're there for, and you pay them for that. You see at my school I take part in everything computer center, clubs, tutoring, because the student fees that I pay won't go to waste. Don't be scared because you're heading for a long and interesting journey. Good Luck!!!

While math is not a problem for me I face anxieties too. Some day I start thinking about what it is going to mean to be a nurse and get scared (BLeeep). I also am terrible at Anatomy and Physiology. But I conquered the fear and took the class, and while I didn't do so hot I did pass the class with a C. So it can be done. And you will find a way to do it too. You might not get a stellar grade but I am sure you can pass.

BTW, I am 33 and a mom of 3 kids plus 1 husband. My kids are 5, 3, and 1 so I feel your stress. My advice is get a board that fits across your tub and is wide enough for your book and study while taking a bubble bath. Preferably while listening to your favorite music with headphones. That way you won't hear the knocking at the door that is sure to follow. I have a scheduled study time. And I disappear behind a closed and locked door. And if you have some classes that you feel you might need extra time with, take them with easy classes or by themselves. I feel I could have gotten at least a B in A&P if I hadn't taken it with Microbiology (another hard one for me). Some people breeze through those and struggle with others. Every person here has the class they just aren't good at. So we work that much harder in that class.

    Good luck.

I started school in the boat you are in with a 2 year old and 2 month old and was horrible in math. I did it. Just be aware it will be one of the hardest things you will ever do. Break things down in small bites rather than looking at the huge picture. That helps. As long as you have family support and realize studying takes the lead rather than a clean house and family meals you will be fine.

This always sounds like BS, but its not.

Keep your head up, stay confident, and never be afraid to ask A LOT of questions.

Hi! I'm 36 with 3 children and I'm starting nursing school, too. I was fixing my daughter's hair the other day and nearly had a full blown panic attack when I was thinking about what being a nurse can entail. (Mean doctors, lawsuit threats...etc.)

I had a lot of problems with Math...but I bought a Math Smart book...starting looking over it...and emailed my professor (or went to his office) if I needed to ask questions. He was very, very helpful. Most professors are when they see you are genuinely trying. So far...after having D-s in high school...I'm getting As in college! You can do it!
