Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I knew since elementary school (literally) that i wanted to be a nurse and it hasnt changed! At the age of 21 yrs old I had two children and was spiraling towards a life full of regrets but by the grace of god my eyes were opened and i began to truly see life. I worked as a cna in 2008 and 2009 but started doing customer service in 2011 until now. I enrolled at my college bsn program in fall 2011 and only six credits away from completing all my cores (im working full time still so going to school partime).. i take my teas test this november and will be applying to three school' nursing program in my area with hopes of starting aug 2015. My school only allow u to fail a total a total of three classes in areas A,D, and F (math. reading. science) so although I have a 3.6 gpa and an A in ALL of my math reading and science classes..ive had to repeat one class in each area due to me allowing life problems become school problems and ive now learned the two must NEVER meet. So thats why illl be applying to three schools including mine next february. Any advice on what to expect as a nursing student? My kids will be 4 and 5 when i start the program so i plan on renewing my cna to work weekends..I'm so ready to being nurse jackson! Please share your journey and any advice. God Is Love

I'm a mom and an RN; I actually had my first baby while in nursing school. I'm now chipping away at my BSN so am having the experience of being a student w/ older kids. It's a lot of work for sure! I've done my homework while they do theirs but most of it after they're asleep, and we eat a lot of pizza and crockpot stews. :bookworm: :writing: But I love being a nurse, and my kids think it's pretty cool too. :nurse:

Going to RN school was probably one of the hardest things I have ever done. It never seemed to end, was stressful, tested my confidence, and tested my family's ability to support me and function without me being fully there. We all made it. :-)

Do you have family support? A spouse or relative? You will need some support with the kids. Especially those times before a big exam, it's good to be able to have someone step in and care for them for about 2 days before, in big chunks of time. You need to also make friends with your classmates and form a strong study group. It made a huge difference to me.

My kids were young school age when I went to nursing school. I started the RN journey when they were just 3 and 7 though. I had a very supportive spouse and would often disappear to the library on entire weekends to study. Just keep your eye on the goal and slog through it. You have made it this far. Good luck to you!

I am a single mom to an 8 year old boy. I start the program in the fall. Just make sure you have back up babysitters. I could not have done this without a good support system in place. Right now my son is on his 2 week spring break. I go to school 5 days a week so i have had to have lots of babysitters for when he is out of school, sick, 2 hour delays, etc. My son also does competitive judo and I spend most of the time I am not in school either in the dojo or at a tournament. I feel like I run all of the time and sleep has taken a back seat, but in the end I know it will all be worth it. My son is proud of what I am doing and that is what keeps me going.
