Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

Okay - in like manner - My name is Traci. I am married with 2 kids (9, 7) and will not be completed with my gen eds until the end of this year. Due to clinical space issues, my school only starts one session of nurses a year (RN program) and therefore, I will be waiting until next Fall to begin - but I have decided that it is okay. I could waste 3 years not doing anything - or I can do this thing and look back on what I've accomplished.

My summer session doesn't start until 6/13 (Sorry Jennifer) and is 8 weeks long. I will be taking Micro and interpersonal communications - both on-line. However, the micro does meet on Mondays from 1:30 - 4:30 for a lab. The less childcare issues I have to deal with, the better.

As for Micro - a good friend that I made the last 2 semesters of AP had it and said it was very interesting - at least to her. We are using Microbiology: A Human Perspective (Nester). I know all instructors/books/etc. are different - but in this particular class she said it was very helpful to start off right from the beginning with an index card for each microbe, or whatever they are, and all of their properties. She said for some reason (logic??) they didn't list everything together anywhere. It was piece-meal and it was very nice to have a card where she could add the info as it was given to her. Also, I have purchased the Micro coloring book - she said it was a lifesaver, for her. We will see....

Well, I guess that's me - awaiting my AP2 and Spanish 2 grades...hoping to maintain that GPA - you know....Look forward to meeting more people and getting to know others better.

Jennifer, that is awesome about Disney World - I am sure the kids will be thrilled!! We are campers (tent campers looking to buy a small camper) and like to go to State parks - especially ones with caves. Just got back from a trip this past weekend, and are already planning Memorial weekend and Father's Day weekend. We have a blast.

Good luck to all - let's get through another one together!

Boy, Micro must be the place for SAHM's!!! (LOL)

I, also, have three children -- ages 6, 8, and 10. And, Micro is my last pre-req before I start nursing school in the Fall. Anyone know how hard this class is -- compared to A&P I or II? I thought A&P I was actually harder than A&P II -- I did much better learning physiological systems than I did memorizing bones, muscles, and the twelve sets of cranial nerves. I start June 1st and go for eight weeks -- through the end of July. I was reading through the book, yesterday, (Yes, I suppose that officially qualifies me as a "nerd" --opening the book before the semester begins... Ha, ha!) and it seemed pretty interesting to me. Looks to give a lot of potential reasons why one could get diarhhea or have intestional problems. :chuckle

Anyway, I'm in the Southeast and would love to hear from others who might be taking Micro over the summer. And, I'm very envious about the trip to Disney. That's awesome!!! Your kiddos are going to be SO surprised and excited!!! And, that will be a nice, much-needed break during the middle of the semester for you. Take a few rides on Space Mountain for me! :)

The ads online and elsewhere are basically bogus. They try to get you to pay for information that is free if you look for it. You can find lots of information about mystery shopping at www.mysteryshop.org and www.volition.com. HTH :)

Hello,

I am another SAHM who will be taking micro in the summer. I have a 6 year old boy & a 3 year old girl.

I am taking a six week course that starts June 6. We will be using Microbiology by Bauman for a textbook. I am so eager to finish with this class as it is my last nursing pre-req course. I also have already started reading the first couple of chapters--so I guess that makes me a NERD also:)

A am so excited to be starting my actual nursing classes in the Fall!

The trip to Disneyworld sounds like it will be tons of fun!

Hi everyone!

My name is Mi'Shelle, and I'm a studyaholic....wrong thread? sorry...hope that doesn't offend anyone because my family thinks I study 24-7 lol...

Anyway, I am yet another SAHM. I have two girls, 13 and 7. (Actually the oldest will be 14 on May 25th!)

We too deal with band and cheerleading here as my oldest was a cheerleader in 7th and 8th grade, and has now made the Freshman cheerleading team at the high school where she will attend next year. She plays percussion in band, so we are also dealing with drumline practice at the high school, as well as cheerleading practice..

My little one wants to start softball next season to add to the craziness. lol

As for MICRO: My micro starts May 17th, and I'm taking evening classes all summer. The Micro is, I think an 8-week course which starts in "Maymester" and runs through until the end Summer of Summer 1. Then I start A&P 2, which is a 4-week course :uhoh21: After Summer 2, as long as the grades are where I want them and need them, I will be finished with my pre-reqs and non-nursing courses! I will apply to my nursing program at the end of August. :)

We are using Microbiology by Tortora, and Benson's 9th edition of Microbiological Applications - Short Version.

I too have cracked my book and started to read, but I just finished my A&P 1, so I have only read a couple of pages so far. lol

Anyway GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

I am the Grandma of the bunch! 50 something and starting my nursing classes this fall. Micro, English (Research & Writing) & Developmental Psych are on my plate for this summer. We have 5 grown children and 11 grands and I just figured out what to do with my life.....okay, so I guess I'm a little slow. Classes start again next Tuesday!

Welcome to all.

ncstudentnurse - you know I had a more mature lady in my AP2 class this past semester - and she was such a blessing to us! In my opinion, it doesn't matter how old you are (or young) we all have something to share!!

It sounds like we are all starting at different times during the summer. So good luck to everyone starting right away!!

I am glad to meet all of you!!

I am another SAHM with an almost 6 year old boy, and a just turned 3 year old girl.

I'm finishing up Anatomy right now, our lecture final is on Monday, and our lab final is on Wednesday. I only have Micro and Physio left. We start Micro on June 14 and go until Aug 3. It's only offered in the evenings at my school, so I'm going to lab from 3-5 and lecture from 7-9 TWTh. I'm also volunteering in the Anatomy lab from 12-3 on Tuesdays.

We can't get our books until probably a week before classes start because they won't tell us what the book is until then. I think they think we will all go online and buy them cheaper than at the bookstore. Which is true, but it's frustrating for nerds like me (us?) who want to get ahead in the reading.

Hopefully the summer won't be as jam packed with info and as stressfull as Anatomy has been so I'll be able to post.

Looking forward to discussing Micro with all of you

I'm yet another SAHM taking Micro this summer! Our girls are 6 years & 3 years.

I just finished Dev Psych online last night. I scored high enough on the three exams to be excused from the final. My A & P I final is next Tuesday. I have a 97 going into the final, so I'm just hoping to keep my A.

Next Thursday morning we are leaving for a family vacation to Hilton Head, SC - our favorite place on earth!! Since my online Micro class starts while we are away, the professor gave me permission to make-up the lab when we return. (Summer Micro is a 12 week class, with a three hour lab once a week.) Micro will be over August 12th, and nursing school orientation begins August 16th. I knew we had to sneak a vacation in this month or not take one until next year at spring break!

In my previous life - before children - I was a civil engineer. I had a great 10 year career that I left when our oldest daughter was born. Now that the girls will both be in school in the fall, it was time to find something to do outside of the home. The thought of going back into engineering wasn't exciting me - even though DH owns an engineering firm and offered me a job! Last fall I decided to look into nursing school, and began taking my co-reqs early.

I look forward to getting to know all of you this summer! I'd love to hear how everyone is juggling motherhood and school!! In our house, nobody has clean clothes and there is no food in the house leading up to my A & P exams. The girls are okay with it, but DH gets a bit upset. He's just used to being spoiled......
