Microbiology Fall 2006 - page 2

Starting a new thread and hopefully someone in the know will make it a sticky ;) Got an 84 in my first Micro exam last week. Not what I wanted (I had a 4.0 going into this semester), but... Read More

Yes, I'm in lab also.... it is a separate class, but it is graded as part of our lecture class. It counts for 20% of our whole grade. It really isn't very hard, we did a lot of microscopy the first couple of weeks, and now we're doing a lot of growing and observing cultures.

To DivaMomto 3 and mattsgirl: Congrats on your test scores!

    Thank you!!!

Well, my test was this morning. I have no clue how I did. I was about halfway through it when I started thinking that it seemed abnormally easy to me. So, either I bombed it or did really well, lol. He words things way differently on his tests than he does on our notes, so it can be tricky sometimes. Anyhow, he said our grades should be posted online tonight, so we'll see!!!!

www.cdc.gov my new favorite site! It's really come in handy so far.

DivaMom: Hope the test went well, keep us posted!

Casi: yeah, the CDC website is great! I've been using it for my Case Study project. www.mayoclinic.com is another good resource I've found.

Well, I got an 86. I'm not happy about it, but what can ya do?

86 means good. I know you're not thrilled...but you didn't bomb it! I understand...I'm one of those types who's not really happy unless it's an A.

What types of studying do you find most effective...groups? solo? cramming the couple of days before? studying a little at a time for a bunch of days?

We have our final two weeks from Wednesday....WOAH! The quarter has gone so fast! The final is going to be 75 questions....50 over the last 1/3 of the material (that will be only time we have been tested on that part) and 25 (which she is giving us a study guide for this part) over the 1st 2/3 of the material.

We have our 2nd of 4 exams next Thursday. Hopefully it goes better than our first exam! Our first exam's mean and median were around the 61% D- range. There were approximately 4 students out of the 120 in our class that achieved A's (I was unfortunately not one of them). However, I am studying my arse off this weekend so I can hopefully achieve an 'A' on the next exam. I am pretty sure I pulled off an 'A' on our 1st lab practical this past week. Just waiting for the scores to be posted.

I'm not on the quarter system, but this is my last semerster as a pre-nursing major. Good Luck with your exam.

Haven't posted here in a bit, sorry been overwhelmed. We took our 2nd Exam a week ago and it was on DNA/RNA. I was very stressed studying for it, but felt very good after taking it. Today we got it back and I totally bombed it - I got the class average, which was 69 if you can believe it. I'm convinced I'll be retaking this class Wanted to cry on the way home tonight, but immediately channeled that into analyzing the problem of my poor grades this semester and how to change it for the better for the rest of the semester and next. Lack of time to study is a major problem, so I'm trying to find more time to carve out of my already full schedule.

Question - how much do you study every week? How many hours on average? I realize this is entirely subjective, but I'd like to get some ballpark of what others are doing. Folks have asked for study tips ad nauseum so I won't revisit that, but am thinking about taking a study skills class in the January term (my cc has a mini-semester that lasts the month of January every year) to help with that.

For exams 1 and 2 (which were small exams...they basically made up one together, she didn't want to kill us with information in the beginning)... I put in a couple of hours for each one...I got an 82 B on Exam 1 and a 78 C on Exam 2 (the one I studied more for!)....I put in about 6 hours over a week and got a 96 on exam three.

With our lab grades, those exams, and our case study project graded (or estimated low), I've added up my points to figure out what I "need" on next weeks final.

To get an A in the class I need a 94 (not so sure about that)

To get a B in the class, I need at least a 61 (heh, think I'm good there)

To get a C in the class (the minimum grade we can get on a prereq and still get into the nursing program), I need at least a 27 (umm...let's just say I hope I can get more than 1/4 of the questions right...my goodness!)

So basically, I will probably come out with a B. Yes, I have worked hard in this class...could I have worked harder? Of course. Right now I should be studying but nope, I'm playing on here instead. I'm trying to keep a balance in my life and not totally overdo the studying to the exclusion of other stuff (heh, listen to me rationalize...) but it really is true.

Best wishes to you all. 9 days till my final!

If you got a 96 on #3, you can surely repeat it for the final. Fingers and other extremities crossed here for ya
