Medical Ethics class

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I would like to find/start a general discussion on medical ethics. I'm enjoying the class so far but so far it is primarily a book and lecture class. I'm hoping we will do more discussion once we are past the basic theoretical models. I would also like to hear other people's ideas and bounce some of mine off other people outside of the class.

Is anyone else interested?

Very much so. I am looking for a medical ethicist degree track right now. Coming from the east to west coast. I have struggled with the concept that doctors are allow to do anything they want while practicing medicine in a hospital setting.

So far, I'm more into what should be.

For example, Kant's first formulation. If a dr believes the pt would be better off not knowing his diagnosis (and assume the doctor is actually correct about that), should he tell the pt the diagnosis? The prof says, yes, he must. To do otherwise results in a logical contradiction because it must be looked at as though everyone knew the dr would not tell in that situation. The prof assumes that uncertainty is not in the best interest of pts.

I hope the class gets into what is, whether it is ethical or not and if so, on what basis.

my mistake, my last entry was my first ever. i am trying to find medical ethicist course that is not at an msn level. i personally think ethics departments should have a stronger voice in the in-house setting. but i love discussing the topic. i wanted to go to the ana ethics conference in la. i just do not have the time right.
